The six-hour Republican conclave here is (finally) over and we have all the details over at our premium site and in the printed paper Saturday.
Some highlights and leftovers that didnt make the main story:
Yes, the news early in the day was that Donald Trump bailed at the last minute, but judging purely from audience reaction, the 10,000 activists here for the Heritage Action Presidential Forum were equally enamored of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and former CEO Carly Fiorina. Cruz got the warmest welcome when introduced while Fiorina left the stage to thunderous applause.
Cruz was clearly more relaxed in this setting, on stage alone, than he was during Wednesday nights three-hour televised debate in California. His son-of-a-preacher cadence was more at home before a sympathetic crowd and his talking points landed like laser-guided, drone-fired missiles.
Fiorina, meanwhile, started slowly, her soft voice difficult to hear. But, as soon the crowd began to lift her up, she was off and her responses to a series of questions got stronger as she went.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was close to perfect, too, and used his sense of humor and mastery of the issues to excel. For whatever reason, however, the crowd didnt roar quite as loudly for him.
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush all did perfectly fine, though none stood out.
Dr. Ben Carson, was nearly as good as Rubio.
Each candidate was asked to record a video answering one question: How would you as president create an atmosphere where there is opportunity for everyone and preferential treatment for none? The candidates submissions ranged from glossy, expensive productions for Rubio, Cruz and Paul, to poorly lit missives by Fiorina and Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Wholeheartedly!
Long time no see, glad you are here. Cruz is my #1 but Carly is becoming more irritating. I liked her some months ago.
Angry little monkey.
I suspect when the new post-debate polls come out Trump will be in free fall. Hes been riding the free tv media exposure and unless he unloosens some of his cash and gets back on message with an ad blitzkrieg, hes done.
If there has been one person who has been consistent, and that is Ted Cruz. Bravo!
I have watched many of Cruz’s rallies, speeches, filibusters, but I must admit he was the best tonight.
It takes a lot for me to laugh out loud, and when he mimicked the republicans looking for a nominee in 2012, and out of 7 billion people on the planet, he, talking to an audience member said “Do you know how to fix Obamacare? NO, YOU’RE OUR GUY.”
I cracked up.
Your logic is impeccable/sarc
Had no idea who AJC was in the byline.
Well written for a rag like Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Thanks for the YouTube, I enjoyed watching.

Now THAT was funny. Thanks for the laugh.
Well, the article did say she "left the stage" to thunderous applause.....
Hope that was supposed to be "dissolve" and not "absolve".
The Wall Street Journal: “She exudes a bulletproof aura that inspires confidence.”...” She may offer an irresistible pitch.”
Townhall.com: “had a flair for marketing and public speaking”
Carly: “God, what is that hair? So yesterday!”

I suppose some people may like that type thing but I don’t. I thought she did well in the debate but she had no reason to give that type performance at this particular forum.
There was a chance for her to show herself, she didn’t. She came across as a hard, cold salesman. She was acting out a tough persona not being tough.
She comes across as a *itch and after reading her comment about Boxer, I deduce that she IS a catty *itch. She over animates her mouth to be forceful on particular words and has all the perfect pauses. She makes bobbleheaded, teleprompter fiend, jug-ears look warm by comparison. I didn’t even see humanity when she was talking about her daughter.
I don’t buy her sales-pitch for president and I wouldn’t want to have a beer with her. So, I have absolutely no use for her.
Ya know, I did see her flinch and show a flash of ‘real’ at one point and that was when Nikki Haley brought up her being a woman and getting into the last debate....she absolutely butt-puckered about that and it showed in her face.
I have the impression the audience was seeded, the questions rigged to be Islamic by nature, that the whole event was a big giant trap. You don’t achieve a fortune of over 4 billion by walking into a trap. And i support Mr.Trump if he decides to cancel ALL rigged town halls from now on.
Not voting for any ticket that includes Shrillary Fiorina.
Then; ask Congress for a bill to absolve the Fed. Workers Union. Hope that was supposed to be “dissolve” and not “absolve”.
True.. brain fart.. I’m old.... fighting the desire to like Donnie Trump..
So far I’m winning.. A Tommy Smothers crew cut could do the trick..
The head rat is off-putting..
No way .. she is treacherous. Would not want her.
Love Cruz .. but he doesn’t have time to train a VP.
Totally agree.
