Dana Perino: I Think Someone Might Run Third Party, But I'm "Holding My Cards" For Now (Bush?)

She says this on a podcast with Fox colleague Chris Stirewalt.

Dana: Do you think any of them run as a third party?

Stirewalt: No, Paul has been a loyal foot soldier for Mitch McConnell, he ain't gonna do that. And Ted Cruz ain't gonna do that. Could Trump still -- he's not gonna get --

Dana: I don't think it would be Trump.

Stirewalt: Who would it be?

Dana: I'm gonna hold my cards.

She advertised this on The Five and gave a big Chessire Cat grin like she's not speculating, like she knows something.

So: Who? Well, first of all, Perino is obviously very tapped into the Bush camp. And Bush would have the money (presumably) to mount a third party campaign.

Given that this comes down to money, it could be she's talking about Romney, though the initial question about any of them (that is, the candidates) running third party suggests she doesn't mean Romney.

Maybe she was just being misleading there.

Could she mean Bush? Could she possibly mean that Bush is considering a third party run?

Open thread. I know, terrible week of blogging. But seriously last night went really late.

I think Perry could run third party and it would make no difference.

But if he couldn't afford to continue in the primary, how could he afford to run third party?

I doubt Rand Paul would run third party, but maybe he could. Ron Paul could run third party. But probably only if Rand wins the primary.

If that third party candidate has enough of a following, yes, a third party run could conceivably create a democrat. (Think Teddy Roosevelt.) But does Jeb Bush or any of the RINO pygmies we saw on that stage have that much of a base? Enough of a base that would peel enough numbers from Trump to make a difference? Are there very many rank and file republicans who would rather put a democrat in office by voting for Christie or Kasich or ? especially in light of the fact that most not hate Trump and those who do prefer other candidates would vote for Trump if he is the nominee, especially with someone like Ted Cruz as his running mate? It would take an awful lot of republicans not voting for Trump, considering the number of democrat and independent votes (a resurrection of the Reagan democrats) that Trump is going to win? Frankly, I see a third party run by these guys as pointless, it will not matter, those people would not garner enough votes to take the election away from Trump and put the democrat in office. Romney is the only one I can think of who might be able to pull it off, because he theoretically he could take about 20% of the GOP vote (the Mormon vote) and that might damage Trump, handing the White House to Hillary. But does the Mormon leadership want a democrat in office that much to pressure their membership into voting for Romney, who can’t win? Even so, the rank and file Mormons might break from their leadership in the privacy of the voting booth.

If Bush ran third party he might get 1 or 2% of the vote and UNDOUBTEDLY ASSURE that the next President would be Republican.

I think 2016 is the last chance for the Republican Party as we know it.

Ever since Trump got the lead, I’ve been predicting that if Trump is the GOP nominee, that it will be the GOPe who puts forth the third party candidate to guarantee the rat wins. But -— it didn’t work in 1980, so perhaps it would fail again!
Not sure who the 3rd party candidate would be. Lots of possibilities — mittens being one of them.

If Little Jebbie does this then it is indeed time for the remaining conservatives in the GOP to walk out en mass. Would the GOPE run third party, not a doubt in my mind they would if Cruz or Trump got the nomination. Those that don’t will stay behind as a fifth column to sabotage a Cruz or Trump campaign.

“But seriously, anyone who runs 3rd party will destroy the election and hand it to the Democrats.”

Sanders.
