Jeremy Corbyn tonight claimed his refusal to sing the national anthem at a memorial service to remember the heroes of the Battle of Britain was 'respectful'.
The new Labour leader, a committed pacifist and republican, stood silently as the congregation at St Paul's Cathedral sang God Save the Queen on the aerial conflict's 75th anniversary.
Mr Corbyn, who was dressed in non-matching jacket and trousers and had failed to properly button his shirt, was branded a 'disgrace' by critics.
The 66-year-old socialist tonight defended his actions. A spokesman said Mr Corbyn had attended the service 'to show respect for those who fought' for Britain, but confirmed he had not sung the anthem on purpose. However, the Labour source added: 'He stood in respectful silence during the anthem.'
David Cameron, who attended the event alongside Mr Corbyn and a host of other dignitaries and Royals, this afternoon aimed a thinly-veil barb at the Labour leader for failing to sing the anthem.
The Prime Minister's official spokeswoman said: 'The importance the Prime Minister attaches to the national anthem is well known. Every time he is at one of these commemorative services he is very proud and willing to join with others in singing the national anthem.'

The new Labour leader will pledge his loyalty despite previously campaigning to replace Her Majesty with an elected president and have her evicted from Buckingham Palace.
Mr Corbyn has decided to take his place on the Queen's Privy Council, in spite of its status in far-Left circles as the ultimate mark of the Establishment he has railed against for decades.
It also means he will be given access to top-level security briefings, despite concerns about his sympathy for terror groups and Vladimir Putin.

LEFTY LOGIC:
Jeremy Corbyn tonight claimed his refusal to sing the national anthem at a memorial service to remember the heroes of the Battle of Britain was ‘respectful’.
Stan Hartill, 95, who served with 609 Spitfire Squadron, based at Middle Wallop, said: ‘They should take him out and shoot him. His lack of respect is astonishing.
‘The pilots and crews that fought in the Battle of Britain did so for King and Country. If he doesn’t respect the Queen, then he should at least respect them and the sacrifices they made. Those men gave their lives so we wouldn’t have a swastika on every town hall in Britain. ‘
Where is the IRA now that we need them? Oops, Sorry. They’re reds too.
Lesson learned: Communists never stop plotting to obtain power, one way or another, and the people are still stupid as sheep on their way to a restaurant.
Also: Corbyn is pro-IRA.
