Can Romney Save Us From Trump?
politico.com ^ | 9/15/15 | Matt Latimer

In a tastefully furnished conference room somewhere in the nation’s capital, leaders of the GOP establishment are popping antacids and shaking their heads. Donald Trump is the face of their party now — and there’s no stopping him.

In the latest CNN poll, his lead has grown, due to increased support among two groups they assumed would grow to hate him: Republican women and college graduates. Every candidate challenging The Donald has seen his numbers drop. Ben Carson may be next over his rather dubious decision to attack Trump on illegal immigration — the issue that propelled Trump to first place in the first place.

If only there were someone out there who could appeal to establishment voters, but also engender support from the rank and file. An outsider who has never worked in Washington. Someone with some “high energy,” without the need for caffeine.

Bet they all wish they’d been a little nicer to Mitt Romney now.

When the former Republican nominee first mused about entering the 2016 race, way back in January, he received a harsher welcome than the Apple Pencil. Nasty editorials. Anonymous quotes. Condemnation from pundits who used to champion him. Dismissive comments from donors.

Now these same Romney bashers would be the first to climb to the top of the tallest building on K Street and light up the Bat Signal for him. Or to use another analogy, Obi-Wan Ke-Romney, you’re their only hope.

It’s the only time the media is ever consistent.

They’re throwing everything at him but the kitchen sink, pilot error, helicopter malfunction, natural causes, John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald.

That’s the sad truth. All this talk by the GOPe about destroying Trump Shows their real concern is protecting the political machine.

Here the GOP has one of the strongest candidates it has had in decades. Poll numbers thru the roof. And the GOPe reaction is to now spend millions in ads to try and destroy him? What insanity is this? It shows their utter contempt for the public.

If they do destroy him, I’ll let them in on a little secret, they’ll *never* have my vote. In fact, as an act of retribution, I’ll vote for whoever the Dem opponent is just to help make their third loss in a row a record breaker. I furious at their behavior, and I know I’m not alone.

They’ve made an art form of scamming and bilking the country. They make money, lots of money, as long as the game continues.

Which makes them potentially very dangerous. /adjusts tinfoil

They don’t want the machine to die yet. The rest of the country, as far as they are concerned, can starve, not have jobs, and be the victims of illegals in the country all day long.

But mess with their cash machine, they get really cranky.

Pretty much the way the mob would run a casino with tables with loaded dice.

Amen, Norm.

What do you win when you vote "against"?

A brand new unicorn, that's what!

How about this one? Bet you never heard it. Don is a a great storyteller. This is off the wall, but nevertheless, a great tune. Listen slowly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InxDB7PHykQ

Only if by “save us from Trump” you actually mean “assure another democrat victory”.

Very telling. K street is the epicenter of the Puppet Masters, who pay for the Parliament of Whores.

Actually, voting for that spoiled slimeball leftist Willard was, in effect, a vote for Obozo in whiteface unless you are a trust fund baby.

They have it backwards - if Romney trudges into the race, Trump may have to save us from Romney.

The point of voting is to WIN, correct?

voting for Romney was in effect voting against Obama

An honest question, bert and every other FReeper who thinks in terms of voting "against" -- WHAT do you stand to win by voting "against"?

What do you win? It's not a trick question, it's sincere. What do you seek to win with such a vote?

you win the Presidency

free republic dogma is that
1. by not voting for Romney I teach republicans a lesson
2. Romney would be as bad or worse than Obama

there were two real candidates....... Obama was the worst. Not having him as president is good

Romney's not running. If he ever seriously considered it, all the other retreads -- Huckabee, Santorum, Pataki, Gilmore. Clinton -- probably put him off the idea.

But it is funny to see everybody lining up to be the Anti-Trump as the candidates last time lined up to be the Anti-Romney and none of them being able to make much headway.

you win the Presidency

... exactly as you voted FOR it to be -- with a Republican president who governs like a Democrat.

That's what you win when you vote "against." You rationalize it as a reprieve against the Democrats, but in truth you voted for and won more big government leftism from Republicans.

You WIN what you vote FOR. In 2012, if you voted for Romney "against" Obama, you voted for the Republican party to turn hard left -- that's what would have happened if Romney had won

And you would have been here REFUSING to be accountable for what you voted for because you didn't vote for any of it -- you voted "against" Obama.

Voting "against" is a self-comforting sophistry to rationalize voting FOR everything to move left in a way that you can deny having done so.

You voted for the Republican party to move hard left. BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR IT.
