At 27 percent nationally, Donald Trump maintains his frontrunner status among Republican primary voters, but Ben Carson is now close behind him, a new CBS News/New York Times poll finds.
Carson's support has risen significantly since early August, from 6 percent then, to 23 percent now, putting him in second place. John Kasich and Carly Fiorina have also seen their support rise in this poll, although both remain in single digits.
Some candidates have not fared as well, losing support since August. Jeb Bush (six percent) and Scott Walker (two percent) have now dropped into single digits in this poll. Rick Perry, who announced he was withdrawing his candidacy while the poll was in progress, receives just one percent of Republican primary voters' backing.

His support is literally him not saying anything, and being seen as a “safe” stop against Trump.
Build him up to lure Trump supporters. Then bump him off easily so that JeBush can claim the nomination.
Carson is too timid to have actually garnered those numbers on his own, and he has position statements have been clumsy on a good day. One good broadside by the GOPe, and he will crumble. That is what they plan on when he’s outlived his usefulness.
Seriously, what block of the GOP is supporting Carson? I would think some strict conservatives would support Cruz, a few others spread amongst the field, with the majority finding common ground on Trump. What is Carson brining to the table that I’m missing?
He is ¡Yeb! without that Bush name.

This is the ABCs of politics: Amnesty Ben Carson ... a good man with an untenable position which is harmful to American citizens.
Carson is dangerous for a number of reasons. He is Yeb Jr. on amnesty, supports gun control, and is a Pacifist. He obviously does not see the need to protect our borders, for citizens to be able to protect themselves, and he won’t protect our country militarily.
Add to all of that his criticism of the officer in Ferguson and he apparently does not have good judgment on much of anything.
Trump is drawing crowds of 20 to 30 thousand, what is Carson doing? I agree with others saying that Carson is being built up to stem the Trump tide, but he will then subsequently be destroyed by the GOPe for lil Jebbie.
Exactly right. Carson is bright and principled, but trust me, he would be a sheep walking amongst the wolf packs in Washington DC. We need a lion like Trump or some other strong personality who can’t be manipulated.
We’re on our way to being had.....again. You’re looking at our next President unless someone gets to the bottom of Carson’s support apparatus. That, just as it was when Obama was elected twice, is next to impossible given the lawless climate our elections are held under now.
Barring a miracle of sorts, the will of the American people will continue to be thwarted at every turn. Perhaps it’s for the best. If they can defeat Trump and put him out of the race by underhanded means, he may get to live. Otherwise, they will have to kill him.

I haven’t talked to a single person who wants Carson. They like him personally, but everybody talks about supporting Trump. Something very fishy about the poll.
I have my doubts on Carson going up this much in the polls, based on what.
Carson may be a good doctor and nice guy but he comes across as naive and he just doesn’t have the killer go for the jugular instinct like Trump. Also he has that low monotone voice devoid of much emotion.

After a strong-arm robbery, the 250 lb thug reaches into your squad car for your weapon. The weapon goes off in the car and the thug begins to flee, but then changes his mind and charges you.
If Carson would give the thug another try for his gun he's unfit to be a cop or a President!
