Germanys open-door policy to refugees appears to be unravelling tonight after the country reinstated border controls to curb the overwhelming influx of migrants.
Europes top economy halted all trains from Austria and, in an historic move, temporarily suspended the open borders Schengen Agreement in response to the arrival of tens of thousands of Syrian refugees in recent days.
The decision marks a dramatic shift away from the current abolishment of passport checks throughout Europe's Schengen zone.
The Interior Minister did not specify how long the border controls would remain in place or give details of exactly how incoming migrants would be handled. He said there could be disruption to rail travel. Most migrants have been arriving by train.
Germany's national railway, Deutsche Bahn, said it had halted service between Austria and Germany for 12 hours at authorities' orders.
The rules of Europe's passport-free travel zone, known as the Schengen area, allow countries to reintroduce controls in exceptional circumstances, and the European Commission said that 'the current situation in Germany ... appears to be a situation covered by the rules.'

Also, quite apart from social and security concerns, Germany is the European economic engine. Burdening themselves as they are will only negatively impact their GDP and thus the European economy and world markets.
This just gets better and better, as in worser [sic] and worser.
You didn’t.
economists (bless their pointy heads) would call this a “downwards harmonization,” not an invasion.
idea: let economists mess with europe for another decade just to see what happens!
then watch and learn!
this is like your neighbor eating only macdonalds food for a year. a great science experiment (especially if it occurs in an area where the impact is not direct and immediate, and there may actually be a long term net benefit).
Im flying into Vienna. Thankfully no trains involved.
Not yet.
I meant that there are no trains on my itinerary. I’m flying in to go to a conference. I’ll be met at the airport, taken to a secure location and returned to the airport when its over. All in a bubble.
It seems that you’ll be safe, then. If you see or hear anything interesting, please let us know.
Since its a conference on religious freedom, I know I’ll see and hear interesting things but I hope not any of the interesting things in the news right now.
Stay safe. You’ll be in enemy territory.
Letting economists or anyone else ‘mess with Europe’ for another decade won’t help the world situation. But then, what can we do to make the Euros buck up and protect their own countries and culture and, by extension, the rest of us? Nothing really....
Munich station was closed for a while today after a police dog picked up the scent of explosives. All clear later given. The perp probably got away in the crowd.
This will get interesting as Hungary will not take these scum. So where do they go?
How do you say Trump in German? ;)
Actually it would help the world situation if it would discredit them and their theories once and for all, for all to see, and prevent them from doing worse damage on a worldwide scale.
It is all in the perspective.
“How do you say Trump in German? ;)”
Trumpf?
But it is a good point - whom do they have to fit the political bill?
What a world, What a world......
I guess, if we could count on Germany/Europe to at least perform basic security on the border crossers. But we can’t...
But now we get this report where these Moslems are wearing crosses so they look more like fleeing Christians. Just like Mexicans with fake papers, Moslems with fake crosses indicate they are highly likely to be criminally inclined. And some will be terrorists.
The title of the thread reminds me of a Twisted Sister song.
“We’re not gonna take them. No! We ain’t gonna take them.
We’re not gonna take them anymore!”
