Burning Man considers legal action against Quizno's

The toasted sandwich company published a parody video, “Out of the Maze and into the Playa,” on YouTube earlier this week, a day after the weeklong utopian arts celebration in Northern Nevada’s Black Rock Desert concluded on Monday. The plot sends the characters of the “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,” a not-so-well reviewed science fiction thriller to be released later this month, to Burning Man as a test of character.

“Welcome to Burning Man. The world outside is hanging on by a very thin, non-GMO, cruelty-free, organic hemp thread. Beyond this tent flap lies the beginning of your new lives as Burners,” a Burner says to the characters at the beginning of the video.

Burning Man takes issue with the clip and is considering legal action, not because of the mockery it makes of the more than 70,000-person annual event but because the video is theft of the event’s intellectual property, according to Burning Man spokesman Jim Graham.

So they're actually advertising Quiznos with their very stupid, no-sense-of-humor lawsuit ramblings.

All publicity is good publicity. Certainly my 3-year-old got the intended message: "I want a sandwich!"

“Intellectual property can’t be parodied?”

According to Leftists, yes. They don’t tolerate others who mock them.

I’m a long time Burner and thought it was hilarious.

Also think it’s a good way to take away the cool/fad factor so you discourage those fools who come for an instagram shot.

The festival is what you want it to be. You can be in orgies all week if you want. But you can also teach, be a chef, be a guide and do/see anything you can imagine. People build enormous vehicles, do shows, cook amazing delicacies. Even work as locksmiths and mechanics. All just to gift their passion and make others happy.

It’s truly incredible to see the concept of a marketless economy in action (with advanced robotics it will soon be the way of the world).

I started off as a partier many years ago but last year I was 100% sober and gave lectures on engineering. I also went around nonstop to other lectures/workshops you would NEVER see in any one place.

Yes, it’s initially a bit “strange” to have naked/costumed people discussing robotics and laser manufacturing. But then I thought: are suits/uniforms and silence honestly BETTER?

NO, I realized so many new ideas are made and creativity flows so much easier when people are FREE to express themselves. I came up with one patent joking around at my lecture with a semi-naked girl wearing nothing but a superman cape.

Did you perchance drink any Timothy Leary Kool-Aid? And was your brilliant patent idea a solar-powered umbrella or a bong fueled by whale vocalizations?

You'll excuse me if I'm skeptical about the vast scientific potential of free-thought exercises from a horde of half-naked Supermen.

And before you say it, yes, I'm a narrow-minded cynic who decidedly does NOT believe in the weed-inspired mantra of "If it feels good, do it." I'm convinced that our duty here on earth is to do something PRODUCTIVE with our lives rather than lounging around a unicorn petting zoo.

Sorry hippie losers! Satire is protected speech and fair use. I hope the hippies file their suit in a loser-pays state.

Everything we who have never attended the Burning Man Festival know about the festival we have learned from the media, you know, the media we have complete contempt for. Well, except for when they tell us what we want to hear.

I appreciate the first hand report from one who has been there, from a long time freeper.

The term GMO is PC. As is LGBT a and other pagan PC terms.

Anti-GMO is not PC. The anti-GMO crowd is routinely excoriated by the PC police for being selfish, not caring about feeding the 3rd world and worrying about first world problems. Democrats are all aboard with GMO and Monsanto.

but because the video is theft of the event’s intellectual property, according to Burning Man

Yeah, because you invented the idea of hippies doing drugs in the desert and building a big fire.

The Friday that Burning Man started, Susan Sarandon was on Dr Phil crying about a man set to be executed, it was made clear that the execution was imminent. She was trying to get him spared.

I wonder if Dr Phil was punked? Sarandon was AT BURNING MAN within 48 hours. I live in N Nevada, and they showed her pic on Reno tv.

IF this man was so important to her and was in danger of an imminent execution, she didn’t belong at Burning Man.

With the ongoing drought & the price of hay, Horse Breeding might be re-thought.

Burbon Street and Vegas offer no redeeming values yet those places are culturally accepted and promoted by society both for their entertainment and economic impact.

Add creativity, engineering, and learning, remove the economics and relocate it to the desert and somehow it’s uncacceptable?

Most of my image of Burning Man comes from a documentary I saw years ago, before it became "cool." It was laudatory, not critical. But even then, I saw through the self-serving hype to the anarchist, neo-pagan core.

I wouldn't believe the whore media if they told me the sun was coming up. But I doubt that anyone who would attend such a bacchanal would condemn the experience.

Yeah, but when Trump is president Av-gas will be $0.25 per gallon. Great time to check the whole Pilot License thing off the list... if you haven't already.

We agree on that.

yet those places are culturally accepted

Talk to a New Orleans cop about how "culturally acceptable" some of the behavior on Bourbon Street is. And no doubt ancient Babylon found their brothels and orgies "acceptable" too.

... and promoted by society both for their entertainment and economic impact.

There has always been money to be made catering to vice, sloth, and corruption. And let's face it, those things are lot more "entertaining" than hard work, thrift, and honor. So yeah, let's embrace them. Who needs civilization anyway?

I have read the thread but really? My first thought was. "Theft of intellectual property?"
