'I step aside knowing our party is in good hands, the former Texas governor says.
After months of struggling to gain traction, former Texas governor Rick Perry on Friday said he is suspending his campaign, becoming the first Republican candidate to drop out of the crowded race for the White House.
"We have a tremendous fieldthe best in a generationso I step aside knowing our party is in good hands," Perry said, during an appearance before a conservative conference in St. Louis.
Perry, who has made his mark on the political landscape as the longest-serving governor in Texas history, in recent weeks wrestled with fundraising woes and an inability to break out of the bottom tier during his second presidential run.
"I share this news with no regrets," Perry said, according to the prepared text of his remarks. "It has been a privilege and an honor to travel this country, to speak with the American people about their hopes and dreams, to see a sense of optimism prevalent despite a season of cynical politics. And as I approach the next chapter in life, I do so with the love of my life by my side, Anita Perry. We have our house in the country, we have two beautiful children and two adorable grandchildren, four dogs, and the best sunset from our front porch that you could ever imagine. Life is good. And I am a blessed man."

Graham, Gilmore, and Pataki seem pretty invisible.
Ricky tried to be a major candidate and with that comes with major spending outlays.
Many candidates are vanity candidates running small or nonexistent operations so their expenses are small. They only look for media face time and try to interject themselves for the tv debates.
Oops!!
Miss Lindsey probably is a good person, but a sad case. I feel a little sorry for him. He’s a perfect example of the Peter Principle. Sadly, he doesn’t realize that he’s already reached his highest possible level of incompetence.
He can take off those fake eye glasses now.
Meanwhile, Hillary stopped in Coumbus, Ohio yesterday...
He said there are three reasons he dropped out.
No money.
No staff
And he forgot the third reason.
No money.
No staff
And he forgot the third reason.
I had to laugh at that one...
Ouch!
Have you no heart? /s
Don’t blame me. I no vote for P.
Those f us who don’t live in Texas know him as La Raza Rick.
Good riddance.
I'm looking at you Mike Huckabee!
Yep, time for Huck to go back home and fry a few more squirrels on his popcorn popper.
Trump has a good heart. A lot of his bluster is to disguise his compassionate side so that people don’t use it to exploit him. I have read of so many acts of generosity and compassion on his part to help people that he never wanted any recognition for. God Bless him!
Lol. Popcorn popper.
Good news. He doesn’t want to split Texas delegates. Speaks well of him.
Wonder where his supporter will go...
I wouldn't expect any less from Rick Perry. He is a good, fair-minded, decent man of upright character, and a constitutional patriot. I have always been his big fan from Massachusetts. I especially appreciated his willingness to "push-back" on encroachments from Washington on Texas' state powers during his long tenure as governor. I am so very sad to hear that he is withdrawing from the GOP presidential race. Our loss....
