'I step aside knowing our party is in good hands,’ the former Texas governor says.
After months of struggling to gain traction, former Texas governor Rick Perry on Friday said he is suspending his campaign, becoming the first Republican candidate to drop out of the crowded race for the White House.
"We have a tremendous field—the best in a generation—so I step aside knowing our party is in good hands," Perry said, during an appearance before a conservative conference in St. Louis.
Perry, who has made his mark on the political landscape as the longest-serving governor in Texas history, in recent weeks wrestled with fundraising woes and an inability to break out of the bottom tier during his second presidential run.
"I share this news with no regrets," Perry said, according to the prepared text of his remarks. "It has been a privilege and an honor to travel this country, to speak with the American people about their hopes and dreams, to see a sense of optimism prevalent despite a season of cynical politics. And as I approach the next chapter in life, I do so with the love of my life by my side, Anita Perry. We have our house in the country, we have two beautiful children and two adorable grandchildren, four dogs, and the best sunset from our front porch that you could ever imagine. Life is good. And I am a blessed man."

Trump tweeted about this and wished him well in his future. I like Perry as a person, but, it’s evident he wasn’t meant to be president of the U.S. God Speed - Mr. Perry.
Trump is a real gentleman !! Despite perry’s vicious groundless and personal insulting attacks on him he state this on twitter “I wish him well -I know he will have a great future!” What a fine man Trump is. BTW he has filled the American Airlines center in Dallas !! Tickets are gone!! Finally he is on Jimmy Fallon tonight and it is taped but reports are that it is AWESOME. Trump is fantastic!!
Now is the time when Perry starts collecting all those tax paid government retirement welfare pensions!
