'I step aside knowing our party is in good hands,’ the former Texas governor says.
After months of struggling to gain traction, former Texas governor Rick Perry on Friday said he is suspending his campaign, becoming the first Republican candidate to drop out of the crowded race for the White House.
"We have a tremendous field—the best in a generation—so I step aside knowing our party is in good hands," Perry said, during an appearance before a conservative conference in St. Louis.
Perry, who has made his mark on the political landscape as the longest-serving governor in Texas history, in recent weeks wrestled with fundraising woes and an inability to break out of the bottom tier during his second presidential run.
"I share this news with no regrets," Perry said, according to the prepared text of his remarks. "It has been a privilege and an honor to travel this country, to speak with the American people about their hopes and dreams, to see a sense of optimism prevalent despite a season of cynical politics. And as I approach the next chapter in life, I do so with the love of my life by my side, Anita Perry. We have our house in the country, we have two beautiful children and two adorable grandchildren, four dogs, and the best sunset from our front porch that you could ever imagine. Life is good. And I am a blessed man."

The last RCP polling average had Jindal and Graham tied at .3%. Perry had .8%.
They didn’t make the ‘cut of eleven”.
