Another thing that strikes me is the number of conventional wars that have been and are being waged since the dawn of the nuclear age.

It was noted on other sites today that the unit the Russians are moving to Syria seems to be from the Naval Infantry Regiment (Marines) that was involved in the Crimean takeover.
That would make sense if they are going to secure Tartus.
