Among the Republican presidential candidates, Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz have stood out as the two most ardent defenders of Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, who was recently jailed after refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses in her jurisdiction. The two conservatives made a point to travel down to the Carter County Detention Center on Tuesday to join protesters in support of Davis, but the plans changed slightly when a judge ordered her immediate release.
And then comes the following doozy from the New York Times write-up of this afternoons Kim Davis Release Extravaganza (emphasis ours):
"The rally Tuesday had been scheduled before it was known whether Ms. Davis would be released. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, also a Republican presidential contender, made an appearance, but it was Mr. Huckabee, a former Baptist pastor, who grabbed the political spotlight.
When Senator Cruz exited the jail a throng of journalists beckoned him toward their microphones, but an aide to Mr. Huckabee blocked the path of Mr. Cruz, who appeared incredulous."
You must be shocked, dear reader, to learn that Huckabee planned to hog the Davis-induced political spotlight all for himself. Why else would he make such a low-key statement like Im willing to go to jail in her place?
Probably turn out the aide was directing Cruz around an hazard. The NYTimes is the worst tabloid around.
I totally agree.
I cringed when he said he’d do 8 years in prison.
Political theater.

If this is true, The Huckster is a digusting POS.
And I’ll agree.
If true, a low class move by Huckabee.
The Huckster—an Elmer Gantry knockoff.
I may have to walk that back. I thought I'd read somewhere that some of the other candidates had asked to speak at the anti-Iran Deal rally and Cruz turned them down but now I can't find the source.
Huckabee’s purpose is to serve as the RINOe blocker for Cruz.
The Huckster is merely doing what he does.
That is just beezarro. Hard to imagine Deadley Tedley would take that without making a stink, he can’t be skeered of Huckleberry.
Was Cruz afraid to do anything about it?
I’ve never liked him, and now I think he’s a complete and utter phony.
That doesn’t ring true at all. Cruz is the ONLY candidate that has welcomed all the other candidates into the race. He’s the only candidate that has NOT attacked Trump.
He’s the only one that touts the 11th commandment.
There’s no way Cruz would suddenly ban anyone from standing in unison on this or any other important issue.
That is when the “Paul Wellstone Moment” set in.
Was Cruz supposed to make a scene? What would you propose he do?
I figured as much. Huckabee is a ‘campaign conservative’ and phony to the bone.
Ted Cruz is my candidate.
Thinking this is ‘divide & conquer’ by the NYT.
(the feted grey bitch)
I agree completely— Had NO intent to ever vote for Huck —have always said I intend to vote for Cruz.. This ices the decision as the right one—as the only one to make.
Maybe Huck didn’t like the fact he did not receive an invitation from Cruz to speak at tomorrow’s Iran deal rally in DC. Trump got one.
No surprise. This is what Huckabee does best. Underneath that veneer of Christian populism and self-depreciating humor, is a heart full of darkness, spite, and the will to destroy the opposition like Harry Reid. He’d rip your heart out while joyfully singing “Amazing Grace.”
