Hundreds of thousands of American workers could become newly eligible for paid sick leave after President Barack Obama signs an executive order Monday forcing companies who contract with the federal government to provide the benefit to their employees.
The Labor Day announcement comes after a set of similar orders requiring federal contractors to boost paychecks and conditions for their workers, including expanding overtime compensation, banning discrimination based on sexual orientation and raising workers minimum wage.

Enemy islam rising.
Here is the dirty little secret about this. It costs the contractors NOTHING !!!!!.
These costs just get added on as part of the fee schedule.
Who pays? We do of course.
All this will do is increase the costs of federal contracts.
Idiot.
He sure is generous with other peoples money.
...Who pays? We do of course...
That is the foundation of socialism.
If their contracts do not provide for escalation costs then many may go out of business. This will, doubtless, result in punitive lawsuits by the government. Those that do have escalation clauses will pass along the extra costs to the government, hence, the taxpayer.
When I worked as a contractor there was nobody to take my place. (There were also security issues and my customer’s customer, the Navy, would need to certify any replacement, which can take a while.) If I took leave then my employer would need to instantly replace me. It is doubtful I’d get the job back as my contract with my employer was performance based. No performance, no further employment.
This is a political stunt.
It’s gets even better. Because of the way profit is calculated contractors actually make MORE profit.
We pay more for less.
The additional expenses aside, expect all federally contracted jobs to take twice as long to complete as employees suddenly fall ill and have to use up all their paid sick leave days on each and every job.
My small company stopped doing contracted government work a couple of years ago. Not worth it. If I felt like eventually going out of business, we would have continued.
When I started at my current employer in 1983, new hires got 22 days (one month) sick leave and two weeks vacation. With longevity of service, vacation time increased. Around 1990 they changed the policy, new hires getting 15 days of “paid time off”, (PTO) for sick leave, vacation or whatever. PTO increased by the same amount with years of service, but still topped out at 25 days per year, essentially taking sick leave away from long term employees.
I preferred the old policy, but it lead to abuse.
Sorry but you are wrong. The way DCCA accounting rules work contractors can go back and get more money.
The key is the way these rules calculate overhead. It is actually a two way street. If the real overhead is lower then companies have to pay money back, if the real overhead is higher they get a check.
I can’t agree more
And there are still those that are still happy with the King, our first dictator. And this black piece of junk will do more before we get rid of him.
On of that, it means more federal power. Federal contractors have to follow politically correct rules on diversity and sexual orientation, quotas, blah, blah, blah. It is not a far leap from big-guv controlling federal contractors to feds controlling private companies receiving aid to ultimately controlling tax exempt entities such as churches.
Exactly!
A lot of contractors are working on fixed price contracts or fixed rate contracts. Sick leave will not be billable hours so the new cost will come out of the bottom line.
The Administration is being disingenuous. We pay both above market wages and above average benefits, including our hourly wage employees. But, we are at a disadvantage in the government contracting market because the government has adopted a practice known as Low Price Technically Acceptable (LPTA). The government selects the lowest bidder, which usually is the company that slashes benefits, cut salaries, and hire unqualified employees where ever the government doesn’t do anything to stop it.
The government is happy with the arrangement, they are saving money and since quality is not a hallmark of government operations, they don’t notice the difference. Except that many government managers have begun to realize that they aren’t getting a good deal. This is just a political stunt that takes credit for the fact that the government are going to have to pay more to get the skilled workers that they need. The government needs to let the market solves their problem, not some edict from a failed President.
