Santorum is a good man. I’m not saying he will win, just that I like him enough to have not moved him off my list.

He’s willing to accept all of Obama’s policies, which is easy since he’s so much like him in temperament and demeanor. And he really doesn’t need to know things. He needs experts who know can do his thinking for him.

And do I have to school you with Gandhi and civil disobedience?

BTW, I have a bamboo switch right next to me. ; )

No, NOT a letdown. I definitely see Trump’s reasoning here. By claiming that the Kentucky county clerk has to follow the law, Trump can later claim that the MANY sanctuary cities have to obey immigration law. I definitely see this happening.

I agree

Then, later on, Trump can go back to finding a way to rescind/repeal the homo marriage law.

I like Trump, but there's about a 0% chance he's going to do that. Nor should he. This is a legal (read: Legislative) issue. Congress needs to act on this one. Boehner and McConnell will most certainly NOT do it, either.

Gay marriage is the law of the land. If she doesn’t like it, she doesn’t have to work for the government.

Painful statement, but true. Tossing her in prison is still ludicrous, however.

I have no problem with breaking the law as long as you are willing to take the lumps. We broke the law and were willing to go to war because of Taxation without Representation.

If Kim Davis is willing to go to jail for breaking the law which she does not respect, that is fine. I respect her strong beliefs.

For years I’ve been angry and hopeless and despairing about our country. Then Trump comes along. He has an enthusiasm and excitement that rubbed off on me. I began to think, maybe we can be rallied to our senses by real leadership.

But here’s the thing- right away I noticed I was making excuses and rationalizing for him in ways I NEVER would for other politicians. I’ve learned to pay attention when I do that. I notice others doing the same thing. And it’s not just on one or two things. It’s an ongoing thing, every day. He’ll say something outrageous and we bend like pretzels to accomodate him.

We had some pretty strong words for people on the left when they did this for the current president.

The Kim Davis situation really involves two separate issues. The first is the lawlessness of the Supreme Court, and whether or not their lawless decisions should be honored, and if not, what is the best way to oppose them. On this matter, Trump was wrong to concede that a Supreme Court decision, no matter how lawless, becomes the law of the land. Hopefully he will evolve on this, the more he learns about it.

The second issue is the religious freedom issue. Judging by Trump’s comments, he was not unsympathetic to Kim Davis, but he did bring up a point that I hadn’t heard before, which was that Kim Davis wouldn’t allow any of the other clerks to grant the ‘marriage’ license. This complicates the matter in that she was not only following her personal religious conscience, but was also engaging in political activism.

I don’t disagree with her on either count, but by refusing to let other clerks grant the license, she has entered the realm of political activism. I don’t say that she was wrong to do this, but it changes the situation from a woman being punished for honoring her religion, to a public official being punished for interfering with the execution of the ‘law’. Of course the ‘law’ she refused to uphold is not a legitimate law, but rather a lawless Supreme Court decision. Nevertheless, if a person doesn’t realize this, then the court’s decision to put Davis in jail for not executing the law, seems more reasonable.

What?! Trump demonstrates a cavalier attitude toward Christianity and/or religious freedom? How can this be? Is this not the same guy who said that he comes humbly before the Lord with a contrite spirit when he needs forgiveness and strength?

Wait! I could have him confused with someone else -- someone who hasn't made himself the god of his own life rather than the Lord God Almighty. Yes, it's coming back to me now. This was the guy who had the deer-in-the-headlights look when asked if he ever asked the Lord for forgiveness. Okay, things are starting to make sense to me now. In a moment of clarity, I remember that the person who asked him that question was Frank Luntz. And true to form for Trump, he was dissing Luntz and calling for his firing not long after that.

Okay, okay. All the fog is lifting. Now I remember who we're dealing with here. Trump's the one whose technique is to attack the individual who exposes his shortcomings -- unfortunately a technique that so many FReepers are adopting in their adoration of Trump. Why, Luntz was just trying to entrap him and make him look bad. What else could it be? It must be just awful being the victim of so many people. Poor little Trumpy. If I had the talent and know-how, I'd make a "LEAVE DONALD ALONE!" video. He's just a whiny hapless little victim of all the meanies!
