For years, in spite of the fact that the word criminal implies otherwise, Id always figured that Americas criminals were people who abided by the law of the land and purchased their firearms legally through the proper channels.
Imagine, then, my utter shock upon reading a just-released study from the University of Chicago Crime Lab, in which the vast majority of the citys multitudinous gun-toting felons said they bought their firearms (or gats, in the parlance of our time) on the street as opposed to through legal means. Yes, it seems that news of Chicagos strict gun control ordinances apparently havent reached the residents of the Cook County jail.
According to the study, most inmates who were facing gun charges or whose criminal background involved gun crimes avoided both gun shows and Internet sales (or any legal channels at all, really), preferring to get their weapons from personal connections.
Another thing they avoided were military-style assault weapons, the usual target of liberal gun-grabbers; Chicagos criminals much preferred other weapons.

I’m shocked that this is news to anyone.
I’ve bought guns from individuals.. without a background check.
A couple of them I got from my dad.. without a background check.
What I thought funny is that I traded one.. a 12 gauge “goose gun” for a Savage .22 rifle at a gun shop and had to go through a background check.
I axed them if I should be checking on them too as part of the deal.. since they were getting a gun too.
They didn’t get the joke.
Humorless barstards.
"What?? You mean criminals won't suddenly obey even more gun control laws?

N A W !!
That’s only part of the story.
How did the guns get on the street?
The common answer we hear is ‘straw man’ purchases or purchased in an adjoining lax State but I’ll bet at least 75% are stolen. I have no stats to back that up though.
That’d be my guess. That or gangs in the gun-running business with the IRA, Russians, etc.
THIS is our problem. Anybody who would think like this is absolutely too stupid for words! This is our frustration, viz. trying to discuss guns and law with such people. They're stupid. Stupid! Stupid!
I wonder how many weapons are funneled to gangs from the ATF...
Many years ago, my Dad had a pistol stolen which he reported to the Police and Insurance. Jump forward 5 years and he gets a call from the local law to tell him that his pistol was recovered after being used in a bank robbery. They wanted $275 from him to returm his gun (more than the original price). He let them “destroy” it instead. Jump forward another 5 years and he gets a call from another law enforcement agency to tell him that his pistol had been recovered after being used in yet anothery crime! Now just how the heck did the pistol that was “destroyed” by the cops get back into circulation??? We never found out!
Maybe because "internet sales" still require the transaction to be completed through an FFL-licensed dealer.
There are no "mail-order guns" and have not been since 1968.
“or gats, in the parlance of our time”
Of our time? Started in the 1920s I believe. Or no! Even earlier.
“1900-05, Americanism; shortening of Gatling gun”
Although it refers to a pistol or revolver since the teens/twenties.
That's why they are always talking about the "gunshow loophole". Most gun sold at a gunshow involve a background check. You will notice that the states closing that "loophole" are also requiring background checks for guns given or sold to relatives. A lot of the guns that were purchased before background checks are being passed on to relatives. They want those guns on the books.
Duh. Liberals deliberately leave guns in the hands of violent criminals while seeking to take them from non-violent citizens.
The weapons sold at gun shows by vendors follow the same laws as a gun store. A background check is done on any purchaser.
A private citizen can sell a gun to another private citizen at a gun show, just like the private citizen could sell a gun to another private citizen from their home.
Most of the media doesn’t understand this and think guns sold at gun shows require no background check which is why they scream about the gun show loophole
The author was being facetious.
Hmmmmm
Yes, goodness knows that criminals obey all those other laws.... /s
Months ago I emailed Mayor Rhambo that he should deputize the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense (HQ conveniently located nearby here in Indiana), team them with Baraq’s BATF, and head into the ‘hood in Chicago to clean up all the illegal guns.
So far, no response....
