Katie Steinle, 32, was walking along Pier 14 with her father when she was allegedly shot in the back by undocumented immigrant Francisco Sanchez on July 1.
The gun used in the shooting was stolen from the car of a Bureau of Land Management ranger.
The tragedy sparked a national debate regarding the sanctuary policy that allowed Sanchez to be out on the streets on the night of Steinle's murder.
Sanchez, 45, was in the custody of San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, who released him in April without notifying US Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a 20-year-old marijuana possession charge was dropped.
Federal officials had requested to detain Sanchez, who has been deported five times and was wanted for a sixth removal from the country, for deportation proceedings.

“OTOH, they lived - voluntarily I presume - in San FranSicko? A sanctuary city? What the old saying? You made you bed, now lie in it?”
The Steinle family are NOT residents of San Francisco. They live over here in the East Bay in Pleasanton which is probably 30 miles from SF. But the idea that you think their place of residence makes the death of their daughter somehow “acceptable” is a reprehensible thought and you should be ashamed for saying so.
“4 star sheriff ?
Im impressed.”
This a$$hole couldn’t take a bent dime out of a Coke machine! Plus, since he’s been charged with “spousal abuse,” he can’t even carry a firearm. He is up for re-election this Fall. It will be interesting to see if he’s re-elected!
“Cities do not have a sheriff. Counties have sheriffs, not cities.”
San Francisco is unique in that it is a City AND a County within the same boundaries.
That’s a spiffy uniform there, especially with all those stars.
Oh the city and the county share the same name and geography? Ok, thanks for the correction. I thought San Fran was a city only.
IF those parents are Dems, then throw the case out. They got what they voted for.
That’s really cruel. Regardless of their party affiliation - they lost a beautiful daughter.
In SFCA, he’s got the inside track.
LOL!
Won’t get a dime. SCOTUS has already ruled in several cases (IIRC, Conestoga, Prinz, etc.) that police have no duty to protect a particular individual.
The loss is real and tragic, as is the voting for the condition that caused it.
“There are several cities like this”
But SF is the only one here in CA. That’s what I was referring to.
