Donald Trump 2016? It's up to the Conservative Movement Now
The Washington Times ^ | 08-31-2015 | Steve Deace

Posted on 08/31/2015 3:42:18 PM PDT by parksstp

He currently holds unprecedented leads in national polls, including across-the-board edges in all of the early primary/caucus states. His likability numbers with Republican primary voters are on the upswing. He’s a billionaire who can spare no expense in self-funding, which means he’s already amassed the largest war chest anyone will have in this campaign.

Nevertheless, most of the intelligentsia still doesn’t believe Donald Trump has much of chance to be the 2016 GOP nominee.

The conservative movement has the ability to challenge Trump head-on by offering the same game change fed-up voters are looking for, but with the conservative principles that make us Republicans in the first place also in tow.

Deace is a Cruz supporter and he also misses the critical point. What stances on the following issues do the conservative principles he mentions cause a conservative to take?

1. Securing the southern border with a wall and adequate BP.

2. Strict enforcement of all immigration laws?

3. Deportation of illegals already in the US.

4. Birthright citizenship for children born to illegals.

5. TPA, or fast track trade authority for Obama on TPP, and for later presidents on subsequent trade agreements.

6. TPP and other trade agreemnts being negotiated.

7. Surrendering bits of US sovereignty to international trade organizations.

Those are the issues that have vaulted Trump into the lead. Anyone want to tell us what the proper, principled conservative position is on those issues?

Based on what most Repubicans who claim to be conservatives have done in the past, a conservative should be in favor of all those items that Trump opposes.

These issues, and this Republican primary, does not fit any simple definition of conservative and liberal, and those trying to claim it does are not dealing with reality.

Yes, I read the whole thing. I agree with Mr. Deace.

One thing Trump can do is position Cruz to be palatable to the establishment. They hate the disruptive influence Trump brings. Cruz might go to something other than a$$hole if he is viewed as an acceptable choice.

Well, then we’ll win with a “not verifiable conservative”. I’ve had it UP TO HERE with the nitpicking purist holier than thous. They NEVER WIN ANYTHING. And they appear hell bent on maintaining their sorry losing streak.

TRUMP/CRUZ
2016!

“...Nevertheless, most of the intelligentsia still doesn’t believe Donald Trump has much of chance to be the 2016 GOP nominee...”

And the “intelligentsia” is who???

The “intelligentsia” has been saying things for years and have been wrong for years...

The common, everyday, working, true conservative American will decide this matter....I hope...

Cruz is my first choice, but I’ll have no problem pulling the lever for Trump if he gets the nomination.

AMEN!

Which may be the fastest way to get a President Cruz. Four years of Donald will clear out some trash and bring Cruz up to speed. He’s young and he could learn some things from the Donald. He’s got all the brains and knowledge; Cruz just needs to learn the Art of the Deal and Media Management 101

So the ball is now in the conservative movement’s court. It is time for the movement to decide if it’s really okay with Mr. Trump transitioning from its co-belligerent provocateur to its standard-bearer. If it is, so be it, then sit back and let the process play itself out rather than risk being on the wrong side of the tornado’s path.

But if the conservative movement is willing to seize the moment and finally assume the mantle of party leadership it’s never been able to wrestle away from the establishment, the opportunity is there to come now and reason together.

Fed up voters are going to want a third party (Mr. Trump) until we (the conservative movement) finally give them a second party.

I gotta tell you, this is an *excellent* analysis and for the most part spot-on.

I disagree that Ben Carson is the only other candidate that can "stop" Donald Trump. I think Ted Cruz can, perhaps, maybe Scott Walker also --- but beyond them? No one.

I think the author did an excellent job on how he's presented the timeline of events that have led up to this point. I think that timeline really stretches back to 1996, but who's to quibble at this point when the author got so much more right.

Excellent find and post on your part!

We know he’s not a conservative, but he is a fighter.

Which is exactly what the grassroots conservatives want!

If Boehner and McConnell managed to find their balls after the 2014 elections and stopped Obama's lawless destruction of America, Trump wouldn't even be in the picture.

The fact that he is speaks VOLUMES to how pissed off people are at McConnell and Boehner's complete lack of leadership.

(Disclaimer: I'm not a Trump fan, but if he's the candidate I'll damn' sure pull the lever for him for no other reason that this country is on the verge of collapse now, a Clinton or Sanders Presidency really scares the sh*t out of me.)

Conservatives are COMING AROUND to Trump, which is why his numbers continue to climb. Don’t worry, he’ll do just fine.

And voters have already proven they will cheer on every punch he throws, no matter how below the belt it may be. Because . . . at least he actually throws punches.
