TRENTON, N.J. (AP) An elementary school teacher who was allowed to keep his job despite being late for work 111 times in two years said Friday that breakfast is to blame for his tardiness.
"I have a bad habit of eating breakfast in the morning, and I lost track of time," 15-year veteran teacher Arnold Anderson told The Associated Press.
In a decision filed Aug. 19, an arbitrator in New Jersey rejected an attempt by the Roosevelt Elementary School in New Brunswick to fire Anderson from his $90,000-a-year job, saying he was entitled to progressive discipline.

Unions our good when you our a teecher and you gotta eat breakfast in the morning!
eet breakfast!
That’s odd. I eat breakfast every morning after running and I’m always in early.
An elementary school teacher makes $90,000 a year! Insanity.
$90,000/yr for a 3rd grade teacher?!
$90,000/yr for a 3rd grade teacher?!
Well it is the most important meal of the day, you know. I guess he can’t get up an hour earlier to prepare and eat his hearty breakfast and still get to his JOB on time. Some one in the union should counsel him on that. Those of us who have a real job, would have been fired after the third tardy appearance.
Yeah, same here (albeit retired now). I used to have to be at work at 7AM, on the dot. I was able to get in my exercise, have breakfast and commute 30 minutes to be on time each and every day unless a weather event caused delays. This is flatly a joke.
Beyond that, who was there to pick up the slack, some part time over paid baby sitter??
$90K per year!!! I thought all “educators” were poorly paid. What a joke.
The school deserved to lose this because they failed to call him out on this problem early on.
Well after all they have to work 183 days a year or so.
Public school teachers come from the bottom 20% of the graduating statistics at colleges. Yes, there are exceptions thank God, but it's a fact. The taxpayer pays the most for the worst. That's how modern government works, and it applies to everything government does.
I’ll bet the school has been tracking his tardiness for a long time. As someone who has managed employees, I can tell you that it takes insanely long, even with extensive documentation, to hold employees accountable for anything. I once had an employee who was late 96% of the time for a year who, even after regular warnings and reviews, still was not fired.
People who are late are losers. There’s a saying in the military: “If you’re early, you’re on time; if you’re on time, you’re late; if you’re late, God help you.”
That was my primary lesson in school. (1987-2000). Teachers never made enough. They barely had enough to dig through dumpsters, let alone buy cheap food.
Remember when they has “State teachers Colleges”? One or 2 levels below Community Colleges. Today some community colleges are better than universities.
Teachers who have been at it a while can do quite well if they teach in affluent jurisdictions. My wife has been teaching for thirty years and makes mid-nineties plus another ten or so in benefits as an elementary school reading specialist and that's for working only nine months a year. It is in a very wealthy county and is non-union.
Can you provide support for that statement?
You can learn more today watching Youtube clips on how to do stuff than going to school. The critical thinking part which led me to that conclusion does however partly come from higher learning.
