A good, hard look at the statistics will tell you why African Americans have reason to fear an encounter with police.
Its never much of a surprise when I hear it, but it stings all the same. Freddie Gray would be alive today if only he hadnt inexplicably sprinted down his West Baltimore street. As would Walter Scott, the African-American man who was shot in the back in South Carolina fleeing a white police officer who then made an unsuccessful attempt to frame Scott for provoking his own destruction.
If only Sandra Bland hadnt been so rude and had put out her cigarette when asked, no matter her constitutionally protected rights to both. If only Samuel DuBose had not tried to pull his car away from a Cincinnati university officer who then proceeded to empty a shell into his skull.
If only.
The question persists: Why do they run? Why do they run? Why dont they just cooperate with the police? This is America, after all: a country where one is presumed innocent until proved guilty.
I know why. I am a black man, and I have been arrested. I am also a husband and father of three, a lawyer, a former White House aide and now a candidate for Congress.
The police made a mistake, as humans inevitably do. It was a little more than a decade ago, when I was in my early 20s and well on my way toward a promising career. I was in a car with some friends and fellow law-school classmates when, as a thoughtless prankthe sort that tends to hang over from adolescenceone of them shouted an obscene comment at a woman on the street. That woman turned out to be an undercover police officer.
Let me state that what he did was wrong,

“Havent you heard of Black and White Fever?”
I had to look that up since I wasnt familiar with it. Sounds like an excuse for people worried about getting caught.
Of course everyone is innocent until proven guilty in our country... but in the situations that I have been involved in there wasn’t a lot of doubt that that the people that ran off were guilty.
Warrants. Lots of them. Many for unpaid child support.
That is what happens when 75% of your race are bastards.
I think that's the perfect explanation. Stupidity.
My wife and I love to watch Cops, just to laugh at the absolute MORONS.
Absolutely NOTHING to do with "race".
You see probably half of the perps being some white trash doing stupid $hit that gets the SAME treatment they would get if they were black.
The other night they showed an obese white guy who stuffed his upper lip with a bag of crack when he was pulled over.
The cops noticed it, and told him to spit it out or he'd be tazed.
He didn't and kept fighting.
Once the cuffs were on, he became docile as a lamb.
Now, argue all you want about the war on drugs, but FGS, act like you have some sense when dealing with the police.
The white fool turned a likely night in jail into a big-time felony.
I'm guessing that plenty of the white criminals on Cops are at the far left end of that "intelligence" bell curve shown above.
I thought everybody knew the answer to that.
African Black Privilege.
Sorry.
But being all those things does not grant special privilege no matter what color you are.
The "don't you know who I am?" arrogant explanation grants no one special privileges. Not even white losers. Or shouldn't.
Well, 35% of black males 15-55 in DC are convicted criminals.
Might as well run.
Author Jawando proves they aren't running because they are intelligent.

Bad decision making and a failure to think things through is widespread in certain communities. If you are a fat guy caught by the cops, what do you think will be gained by resisting arrest? Are you likely to escape? What are the odds? What happens if you fail?
Oh my - the guy dances all around the truth and claims such things as “even a single arrest - without conviction” can have serious career ramifications and how there is a correlation between darker skin and arrest records without addressing the actual higher rate of committing crimes.
Well, according to the article, they are running because they are worried about their career. Yup, I always thought that was the case.
