On paper, Donald Trump offers a lot as a candidate. Hes able to command a room, he is decisive, confident, unapologetic for what he believes, doesnt need to kiss rings and make promises to raise money, and he stands up to an activist media. But campaigns arent run on paper, theyre run in life. And in life, Donald Trump appears to have an out-of-control ego in need of constant feeding, which is coupled with no ability to control himself.
Nothing about Donald Trumps life requires constraint. Worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 billion, there is nothing he cant afford to buy, aside from some countries.
I once had gotten paid all at once from a few consulting jobs Id done; for how I grew up until that point, I was flush. Id had more money in my bank account than Id ever had. Id been paycheck to paycheck before that, with some months pretty financially thin. I remember walking around a Target and, in the electronics department, it hit me: I could afford to buy anything in the store at that moment. It was a weird feeling.
While I could have afforded it, it would have been stupid to buy the most expensive thing there (Im pretty sure it was their biggest TV), so I opted for financial responsibility and just purchased what I was there for. But I remember that feeling. It was the ability to breathe, to check the mail without fearing a bill or have to turn down going out with friends because I needed to pay rent. It was liberating, but it was also foreign.
Every day of Donald Trumps life is like that, everywhere he goes, without the frame of reference of what it was like before. That has an impact on a persons character.
Im not saying Trump is of low character, this isnt a value judgment or a self-congratulatory exercise where I pat myself on the back for my accomplishments, its an observation of a man who cant seem to control himself when he should because hes never had to.
The Fox News debate was 2 weeks ago, a lifetime in politics. Yet, for reasons unknown, Trump took to Twitter this week to attack co-moderator Megyn Kelly again. Using the retweet function to make most of his attacks via proxy, he endorsed calling her a bimbo, among other things.
Pointless and petty, but very Trump.
Donald may not have anyone close to him who can tell him no, or even advise him against an instinct.
The fact that hes raised kids who, by all outward appearances, are well-adjusted, successful children who, unlike many in their situation of birth, still speak with and love their father, is a testament to an important part of his character. But hes not running for the nations father.
The fact that he harbors such a grudge against Kelly for asking questions he didnt like, long after the rest of the world had moved on, gives insight into who Donald Trump is.
What did he think running for president would be like? What, if he manages to get the nomination, does he think Democrats are going to do, play dead? These are people who accused Mitt Romney of killing a woman with cancer, who brought up how his family treated their dog in the early 1970s, who dug up dirt from his high school years. Did Trump really think things hes said about women in the past wouldnt come up?
If he did, he should fire his advisers for failing to prepare him properly. Unfortunately for him, he appears to be the only adviser hes willing to listen to.
As much of a force of nature as Donald Trump is, hes just a man. Hes a man whos made a lot of money through his business dealings, and money is power. But power isnt necessarily money.
While Trump has the power that comes with money, he doesnt have, or even seem to understand, the power that comes from wielding government authority. Trying to earn money is very different from exerting the power of government. One gives you status and comforts in life, the other has the ability to take life, to imprison, to create the rules. People in business try to work the rules to their advantage, people in government make the rules. Its not the difference between a football player and the refs, its the difference between a football player and the person who writes the rulebook.
People will do anything, legal or otherwise, to be involved in writing the rulebook. But to get there they must answer tough, even uncomfortable questions.
I loved it when Trump threw race-baiting activist masquerading as a journalist Jorge Ramos out of his Iowa press conference for constantly interrupting journalists questions. Ramos makes his fortune through division, has his power based on keeping an uneducated populace ignorant and away from assimilation.
But I also loved it when Trump had Ramos brought back in the room, answered his questions and refused to play the Ramos-victimhood game. Running for president, and being president, requires confronting people and questions that are unpleasant. Donald needs to accept the fact that hes quite good at it when hes comfortable with the issues, and awful at it when his ego is bruised by questions that make him uncomfortable. Because no one not the media, not his fellow candidates, and certainly not the Democrats is going to roll over and declare anything off limits.
If Donald Trump cant handle tough questions about his past statements without continually throwing a fit, even weeks later, it raises questions about how he would act when things get heated while sitting across the table from world leaders. If a business negotiation breaks down and personal attack fly, egos are bruised. If world leaders let the invectives fly, and theyre taken personally while holding a grudge, the consequences are much greater than lost money.
Trump is a refreshing change from the usual political BS weve been spoon fed by both parties; he is a force of nature. But even hurricanes peter out. If hes going to last, if hes going to end up with a real chance at the White House, hes going to have to find a way to keep in check his worst enemy.
Have another cup, my FRiend. You no doubt realize by now that Derek Jeter played baseball, not football!
I think Ann Coulter and maybe even Laura Ingraham have both told him to tone down the 3 AM tweets, and I think you’ll see that.
“What other journalists want to be publicly humiliated like Megyn Kelly and Jorge from Univision?”
Not to mention the free air time Trump gets from each incident. As they say, there’s no bad publicity.
>> Derek Jeter played baseball, not football!
Boy is my face red! :-)
If one thing has been proven, Donald Trump is NOT his own worst enemy. Do these people have a clue?
<><><><
At this point, I don’t think we have enough data to make the statement you make above.
Trump is in a brand new arena, trying to master the political universe. He’s clearly doing very well right now, but we’ve seen enough front runners come down to earth and then disappear, some, like Herman Cain, who were also new to the political universe.
Go have another cup
>> Jeter played football ????
Yeah. He did.
BOB Jeter, that is: https://www.google.com/#q=jeter+packers+football
Clearly, I was seven or eight playing cards short of a full deck this AM...
Up until today, he is NOT his own worst enemy. And he can’t compare to Herman Cain who was hamstrung by Gloria Alred. I don’t see Trump being hamstrung by anybody at this point much less that creep.
It’s all about perception.
My guy, Ted Cruz, has two personas.
One is the constitutional conservative who will fight his own party.
The other is the loving christian family man.
Trump has at least three personas.
One is The Donald.
The brash, flamboyant billionaire whose ego and braggadocio knows no bounds.
The man who can say anything at anytime just because he wants to.
The New York street fighter who doesn’t back down.
The second is the cold, calculating business man who swims with the sharks and wins.
He knows his name is The Brand and won’t let others get the best of him in a business deal.
The third, and least known, is Trump the family man.
Divorced, but still on decent terms with his first wife.
His children have avoided the traps many children of the wealthy fall victim to.
No sex tapes starring them have surfaced.
No arrests for drunken behaviour.
They appear to be well raised, successful people.
Ted Cruz is a “here I am, this is all there is to see” type of person.
I don’t view that as a bad thing.
In fact, simple person I am, I like it.
Donald Trump changes his persona to fit the situation like he changes jackets for different occasions.
He wears the personality appropriate for the occasion.
I don’t view that as a negative.
He gets the most out of who he is.
Cruz’s turned me off with his nonsense about “Legal immigration is good, only illegal is bad.”
So you want no immigration at all?
I don’t mind limited legal immigrants.
We end up with people like Einstein, a true genius.
And Nicola Tesla who saved us from Edison’s love of DC power.
It was the sons of immigrants who helped defeat Hitler and Tojo.
I am a descendant of immigrants. Most of the people in this country are.
Legal immigrants with an education and the desire to assimilate should be welcomed on a limited basis.
It’s the illegals who refuse to assimilate, who suck the wealth of the country and demand we accept them who bring no value to our society.
So, yes, legal but limited is good.
Illegal is very bad.
Cruz didn’t say what you’re saying.
Behold the new, slightly more successful, narrative the GOPe is trying to float.
Personally, I have no problem with the Donald launching pre-emptive strikes against identifiable enemies, nor conducting mopping-up operations against defeated foes.
Horse hockey. He's got a fine temperament in management mode. But in media mode, he has to think like a general.
Exactly! This wasn't an analysis; it was a postulate.
"Donald Trump appears to have an out-of-control ego in need of constant feeding, which is coupled with no ability to control himself."
It would seem there are a few FReepers of equally delicate sensibility ;)
I said what *I* said.
My viewpoint.
And I presented it as my viewpoint.
Do you have a link to what Cruz said about immigration?
Or are you harping on the same old H1B amendment he submitted to a bill?
BTW, you didn’t answer my question.
Are you against all immigration?
Do you want us to throw the baby out with the bath water?
Seal all borders air tight and let no one in?
