Americans Greatly Overestimate Percent Gay, Lesbian in U.S.

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The American public estimates on average that 23% of Americans are gay or lesbian, little changed from Americans' 25% estimate in 2011, and only slightly higher than separate 2002 estimates of the gay and lesbian population. These estimates are many times higher than the 3.8% of the adult population who identified themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender in Gallup Daily tracking in the first four months of this year.

I teach federal government at the local college.

Once a semester I take a poll during class wherein I ask the students what they think is the percentage of homosexuals in the US.

I’ve had estimates up to 50%, with the average around 20-30%.

Very rarely does a student ever estimate the number to be lower than 10%.

None have estimated less than 5%.

The CDC poll some years ago found around 1-2%.

For those who estimated 20-30%, they must be moving in circles of friends, co-workers and acquaintances who don’t represent the norm.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I didn't mean 'to guess' as in an opinion poll. I was referring the guess work that passed as research as the pro-gay media trumped up support in the past. I'm sure, as your polling confirms, the sense of national gayness among the youth is hyper-inflated as the result of a successful media campaign.

Funny, when you press the students they hold firm. . thinking homosexual relations are just ‘loving each other,’ but when you actually detail what sort of ‘loving’ (sex) they engage in, their revulsion becomes plain. . .they are then conflicted, they hate the idea of homosexual ‘sex,’ but are quite comfortable with the idea of homosexual ‘love.’

Where did they get the 3.8% number, since the government poll found 1.6% are homosexual.

They regularly would do this to school kids. They would get an assembly going and have a SS activist address the kids. He would ask them to choose a number from one to ten. Then he would explain that one of them chose a number that made them have same sex attraction aka homoeroticists.

The kids were panicked and would ask afterward which number made them ‘gay’. It was cruel and effective.
