Brandon High School Band pulled from football game performance (and fined $7,500)

The Brandon High School Band did not perform at halftime during the season-opening game Friday night. A statement from the Rankin County School District says a July federal court order is the reason the band was banned from Friday night's halftime show.

The band had been slated to perform the hymn "How Great Thou Art."

The district made the decision to ban the halftime show after learning the hymn was included in the performance.

"It bothers me because you look at the schools and all of the school shootings and all the bad things that are happening, and wonder why. It's because we're allowing evil to step in," parent Kimberly Moore said.

Moore and dozens of parents and students sang the hymn during halftime Friday night in response to those who banned its performance.

U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves issued a court order on July 10, which said "defendants are permanently enjoined from including prayer, religious sermons or activities in any school sponsored event including but not limited to assemblies, graduations, award ceremonies, athletic events and any other school event. That means administrators, teachers and staff of the Rankin County School District may not participate in any religious activity, or solicit or encourage religious activities at school or while performing duties as a RCSD employee.”

Judge Reeves said the district continued to promote Christianity during school hours after it agreed to stop. He fined the district $7,500 and again ordered it to stop sponsoring prayers at graduations, assemblies, athletic competitions and other school events.

Then all the Muslims and the rest will want equal time in the schools. Ramadan festivities at half time? It goes on and on.

And he could play “Fat Bastard” if they ever make a Black version of Austin Powers.

You're absolutely right, and the judge was absolutely right. If you let the hymn in, then some islamist would demand that a muslim chant be put in also. And no way would I want a kid of mine exposed to a muslim chant.

The only way took fix this would be by a constitutional amendment declaring this to be a Judeo-Christian country. And that ain't gonna happen.

Terrible ruling.

Religious music is some 50% of the music ever created and much of the best.

How about letting each High School exercise their God Given freedom to perform as they see fit? Just as the US Constituition guarantees? Since Moslems don't have music, I don't see much competition.

And that was the way it was for many years. Heck, I'm old enough to remember prayer time in my public school classes. And around Christmas time the school choir put on a beautiful show, with many traditional songs of a religious nature.

Those were all good things. But back then, no muslim (or Buddhist, or whatever) would even think to sue over it. And if he did sue, no judge would grant the petition.

But as you and I know, times have changed. The islamist will sue, and the judge will grant the petition. Those are simply the unfortunate facts of today.

I believe the supreme court settled this line of thought by saying if it’s a students initiative then they have the right to include religion in these events. So if the band wanted to do this song and were not told to do so by a teacher they could.

soory I forgot the SC case which ruled in favor of student’s religous liberty

A good point. Of course, what would happen is that the Christian hymn would be banned and the Muslim prayer would be welcomed and anyone who questioned the Muslim prayer would be arrested for hate speexh.

The leftists will say that the fans in the stadium obviously have failed to be “fundamentally transformed” so they need to be “reeducated.”

You bet. The Lords Prayer, every day. Of course there was a schism between the Catholics and the Protestants over the last line, "For thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory Forever and ever." ... said by the Protestants but not the Catholics. The Protestants felt ultrapious, with heads still bowed, as I can attest, while the Catholics, I presume, felt loftily superior with heads uplifted. Yet, we all got along.

Title is misleading.

The band was not fined, the district was.

No one should have been fined, but the judge should be fired.

Oh yeah I forgot.

This is what happens when government decides to flood the country with these folks. They turn on us and subvert the system/culture. Illegals demand Spanish teachers, their own history and on and on.

Maybe government has a secret limit on the number brought in. 50 million more? 150 million more? Of course for every one coming they send for their families etc.
