MARYLAND HEIGHTS A Confederate flag flying at a home in a Maryland Heights neighborhood may be disturbing, but flying it is constitutionally protected, officials told residents of Glenbush Drive at the City Council meeting Thursday night.
The flag appeared on Aug. 17 and has been flown from mid-morning until about 6 p.m. daily, said a black couple who live nearby. They said they have lived on Glenbush for nine years and appreciate the city's diverse population.
Police Chief Bill Carson said he was aware of a dispute over the flag involving others on the street on Aug. 18. "It was just an exchange of words from a distance, between the house with the flag and another house. The police talked to everyone. Nothing serious occurred," he said.

Symbols only have power over us if we give them the power.
It’s a cool looking flag.
Can mean whatever we want it to mean.
Fo shizzle
I was just in Ocean City Maryland; saw more Confederate flags for sale on the boardwalk than I remember a few years ago. Beach towels, T-shirts, even bikinis; some of the shirts would lead you to believe Maryland fought for the South...
Disturbing to whom? This idiot says this as if it is a universally accepted statement.
Very nice! Here in NJ some people in the southern part of the state fly them, as they would be below the Mason-Dixon Line if it ran straight east from Pennsylvania.
It’s not just houses.
People are creatively affixing them to every vehicle you can imagine here in W.MD.
From little economy cars with flags on broom handles duct-taped on, to family wagons with them somehow miraculously attached to the roof [not sure how they did *that*] to a guy on a 10 speed bike with a 3’ x 5’ flying behind him, they’re everywhere.
Every bike event this summer was full of bikers sporting brand new, just sewn on rebel flag pataches on their vests.
A couple local businesses are getting fat and happy, selling out flag shipments every week.
It’s awesome.
Maryland may not have “fought for the south” but it wasn’t because they didn’t want to.
The fastest way to get slapped out here is call one of us a Yankee.
“Banning the flag” was a wonderfully stupid move.
:)
I know it had a lot of Southern sympathizers (which helped Booth escape towards Virginia); it really was (understandably) divided in loyalty.
I live near cities here in northern NJ, where having this on your car would probably get it key-scratched if left in a supermarket parking lot (since our blacks live in self-made food deserts and have to travel to non-black neighborhoods for their groceries).
I recall in the 50’s how the Catholic Church’s banning of a book would guarantee it becoming a best seller.
Wow.
Bummer.
Just about every flag here has a nasty porch or truck dog ready to bite whomever messes with it.
:)
You should go look up the ‘meaning’ of the Maryland flag.
[and our state song before the whiners get it changed to “Shiny, Happy, People” or something]
Yup.
And the powers that be haven’t gotten one bit smarter, since.
Never tell people they can’t have something.
Especially these people.
A black couple is offended by the Confederate flag, would the couple be offended by the ISIS flag? I would be more offended by the ISIS flag, because that is the flag of hateful terrorists, not the battle flag of the northern Virginia army.
It is a neat design; a nearby church has it in stained glass (in recognition of the early tolerance of Catholicism).
Very nice! I’d love to see someone try to disrespect that one...
Threatening his neighbors with a knife getting in a fight and cutting one of them...
Nothing like given the media ammo to continue to demagogue the issue...
A black guy in a store couple weeks ago stared at her, took a step towards us and then opened his mouth as if to say something so Seven moved to meet him and opened her mouth, in preparation for her reply.
He changed his mind and said nothing.
She then went back to licking some kid who was worshipping her.
For all I know, she may have thought the guy presented a “threat” to the kid.
:)
I’m offended by the rainbow flag due to the intolerance it stands for against Christians, and yet I won’t be running about calling for it to be taken down every time I see it.
Why it’s good to have ‘bad’ dogs.
No one will ever charge into my home and “shove” me, without dire consequences.
I believe Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri were immediately seized by the Union to prevent them from joining the South.
