Retire the Myths; Women Are Ready for Combat
NYT ^ | 8-20-15 | Anu Bhagwati

The defense secretary has an incredible opportunity to usher in the end of legalized sex discrimination in the military.

As tens of thousands of women have proved over 13 years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, women are capable of the combat skills necessary to fight alongside their male counterparts. The question now is whether to give women the opportunity to compete for coveted combat arms assignments, such as infantry and special forces.

Since the Pentagon formally rescinded the combat exclusion policy in 2013, well over 100 women have successfully passed the Marine Corps’ enlisted infantry school and two female officers will graduate from the Army’s elite Ranger School this week — debunking three long-held cultural myths: that women don’t want these jobs, they are mentally and physically too weak for these jobs, and training standards have to be lowered for women to do these jobs.

But as of yet, none of these female warriors can legally be assigned to infantry or other combat arms billets for which they have proved themselves qualified. It’s like surviving the trials of medical school and being told you can’t be a doctor.

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter needs to ensure the following happens going forward if he wants integration efforts to create a stronger fighting force:

Some women might be ready for combat but that doesn’t mean it is a good thing to do (though I’d like to see a woman soldier capture an Isis loser and shove her panties down his throat causing him to die a slow death by asphyxiation all the while thinking he ain’t going to get those 72 virgins because he has a womens panties in his throat and he wouldn’t know what to do with a virgin anyway because he has only been with a goat and his palm his entire wretched loser life).

If you could post a link to that article I’d appreciate it, I can use all the ammunition I can get.

Pure nonsense. How is a woman with 60% of the upper body strength going to carry a 250 pound unconscious man who is “dead weight” from a battlefield. This is craziness.

"Day tripped"? Where did you come up with that crap? Nobody friggin' "day tripped" during the Siege of Sevastopol. For almost a year and with a 90% casualty rate, the Russians held off a German force twice its size. In that single year Pavlichenko personally took the lives of 309 enemy and was herself wounded in the process. Included in her tally were 36 enemy snipers. Day tripped my ass.

I’m not interested in the military musings of a guy that avoided the draft due to a pilonidal cyst.

Trite. Give us a call when half of America has been conquered and its a fight for national survival. And they don’t use them in the Russian infantry after the war ended.

Currently the annual physical fitness tests for men and women in the Marine Corps are gender-based.

For example, women must be able to perform a different type of pull-up called a “flexed-arm hang”, while men must be able to perform a set number of fully executed pull-ups to pass the exam.

The Marines is also the only branch of the US military where men and women undergo separate basic training.

I dunno. Birth control doesn’t always prevent a woman’s cycle from happening. So I imagine a woman soldier months on the ground in enemy territory. The unit is undercover, the woman soldier gets her cycle. Is the unit supposed to stop every 3 hours so she can take care of that personal business? Is she gonna have enough room to carry sanitary items in her limited baggage?????

This must be addressed. I say this as a woman.

"Make it mandatory that every female between the ages of 18 and 55 register with the Selective Service"

Over my dead body. Conventional warfare can become irrelevant in mere seconds. If my family survives the aftermath, and the situation necessitates, we'd frankly rather fight female rangers than relentless, robust, versatile, pragmatic and predatory male warriors. Let the state continue to undermine itself. End Selective Service now!

I love the burdens feminists place on women! They do most of the housework and cooking, bear the children, work outside the home and should now be on the front lines in battle! Yes, that’s progress all right.

Ready or not is irrelevant. Fair is fair. It is long past time to require that 18 year old women sign up for selective service. They should have equal chance of being placed in the most dangerous positions. Period!

Mothers of sons should rise up and demand equality in this area.

Exactly. Your point is the issue that almost nobody is talking about. This really should get some discussion time on the senate floor when the Iran deal is filibustered.
