Is Trump the next Reagan? (vanity)
August 21, 2015 | me

I just finished watching a streaming video of Trump's rally in Alabama. And I gotta tell you, the guy spoke like Reagan would. Trump doesn't quite have Reagan's sense of humor, but otherwise, yep, Trump reminds me of Reagan.

Don’t let the guys at National Review hear you. I finally had to unlike their Facebook page for their mindless and non-stop Trump bashing. They’re promoting the wearisome, RINO refrain of, “there’s nothing that can be done about this flood of illegals.” Piss on them.

I will go way out on a limb and say Trump is not the next Reagan.

No.

But Trump certainly knows how to talk to people and draw them in.

IF he decides to give up some of his earlier ideas, and his urge to make money and connections, and actually becomes what he might be, then he could be very good indeed.

Ronald Reagan had good basic moral principles, and was guided by them. It’s not clear whether Trump has them or not. But if he can be persuaded to adopt moral principles, perhaps with the advice of a close adviser (such as Ronald Reagan had), then he has enormous potential.

He needs someone with reliable moral principles (i.e., religious principles) that he can count on to help him out.

Reagan actually changed himself to a considerable extent from what he had been earlier. Maybe Trump could do that, too. But he has to want to. He has to put God, country, and American citizens first.

Easy big fella, Reagan wasn't a "Winning Through Intimidation" kind of guy. Nor was he a "Win at All Costs" person, either. Reagan didn't call names and use blustering blurts like "Shut Up" except for one time that I'm trying to remember!

Actually, Reagan was the epitome of civility and statesman like behavior!!!

Seldom was he "In Your Face" stirring up hate and discontent in that manner!

I have to disagree.

He doesn’t speak like Reagan would. The way Reagan spoke is from a different time and place, he was a very special and rare man.

That being said, there are indeed similarities between Trump and Reagan, and that is their ability to go around those who would block them, filter them, or attempt to translate them and speak directly to Americans, and that is a powerful ability.

Trump is not Reagan, but he is something special.

I watch as much as I could, minus buffering delays.
He made sense to me.
But he's NOT Ronald Reagan.
Donald Trump is a BUSINESS MANAGER and a great DELEGATOR, and an OVERSEER of BUSINESS.
I think he'd do very well.
I don't think he's a politician of any sorts.
I like his authoritarian approach to things.
He showed a real SENSE OF URGENCY about our financial collapse, and I believe he can oversee the hard management style this government needs to get out of this mess.

I just hope he's as good at choosing Federal Judges and Prosecutors to appoint, and I hope he jails a lot of crooked government workers, and soon.

He can hold forth with elites, he touches the hearts of the common man.

He’s the absolute OPPOSITE of the many GOP leaders who’ve let us down:

He rewards his FRIENDS and punishes his ENEMIES.

I respect that.

He is dissing NO ONE who didn’t absolutely BEG for it.

He can protect America.

I feel the same. Love what he’s saying, and I’d vote for him for sure, but not expecting that he won’t do many things in office that would totally piss me off ..... But he’ll do great things also ....

Trump is no Ronald Reagan but Trump has an aura about him already. People see him as a man who gets things done...

That's what I meant when I compared the two. Reagan was able to get things done, and he turned the country around. Would Trump do the same?

Reagan went through a decades long transformation process, Trump's is far shorter. Reagan was a union man, whereas Trump has been very anti-union in the past. Trump was pro-choice, Reagan expanded abortions in California as governor.

I think the resemblance is much more a fall back to the time where you could actually talk about issues without having refs run out into the debate waiving yellow and red cards. Much more gridiron movement, get the ball to the goal line rather than some soccer analogy.

To put it more succinctly, both told you their opinions, and then tried to convince you that they are right. There is no dictating what you must believe. And honestly, that is a hugely refreshing thing to see return to politics today.

Go ahead, take a second, and if you have become involved in social media at all, go look at see how the more liberal people express opinions on a topic.. It is rather simple, an image with a bit of text on it, the issue dumbed down to 12 words or less, and a strict dictate that everyone must follow that opinion.

Hillary doesn't have to give a speech, just post an image on instagram and her followers will dutifully paste it into their social media accounts and parrot exactly the opinion of the image. No debate, no challenge, no question.

That really works for about 20% of the population - thinking is tough. Out of the remaining 80%, they too evolve.

Anyway, rambling, but to get back to the topic: Trump is no Reagan. Only Reagan was Reagan. I'd love to see Trump follow in Reagan's footsteps, and know just like Reagan, Trump will make some horrible mistakes.

All that said, it is so refreshing to see more than one candidate in this campaign who can actually hold an opinion, even if others disagree with it. Glad I don't have to choose who to give money to; Trump says he doesn't want it, Cruz does, made that decision easy.

Trump is not the next Reagan. Trump is Trump.

Reagan was the first president that I voted for. After four years of Carter, terrible economy, Iran hostage crisis, and weak leadership, America needed a great leader. I needed to start my adult life with something better than Carter. My daughter is in the same situation, except she had to experience Obama instead of Carter and Iran getting the bomb instead of a hostage crisis.

There are parallels in history, but Trump isn't Reagan. That isn't to say that Trump won't be as great or better than Reagan.

Trump is no Reagan.

Reagan was extremely effective at defining the issue and had the ability to succinctly state his position and his plans on how to deal with them.

It was a two step process and Reagan did it better than anyone including Trump. It’s a process that requires people to accept the first premise in order to deliver the next.

Trump is all over the map.

Not my cup of tea, but I can see how his rapid fire style appeals to soo many people that are desperate for a leader.

Good post yours (#24). It’s close to what I think, except I’d change your “no” to a “maybe”.
