Pink Floyd Officially Breaks Up

Pink Floyd officially breaks up after announcing a new album, The Endless River, to be released later this year. Guitarist David Gilmour stated that the legendary band is done for good, according to Death And Taxes.

Pink Floyd had originally split 20 years ago, but continued with some of the few surviving members who was still associated with the group. Breaking up wasn’t quite a new beginning for the band, even though they are releasing a new album from tracked culled from the sessions that produced 1994’s The Division Bell.

Pink Floyd officially breaks up while releasing a new album that is intended as a tribute to keyboardist Rick Wright. In those 20 years, the band has only performed a handful of times–mostly at charity events–and hasn’t written or recorded any new songs since The Division Bell.

“I’ve had 48 years in Pink Floyd – quite a few of those years at the beginning, with Roger [Waters]. And those years in what is now considered to be our heyday were 95% musically fulfilling and joyous and full of fun and laughter. I certainly don’t want to let the other 5% color my view of what was a long and fantastic time together. But it has run its course, we are done – and it would be fakery to go back and do it again,” Gilmour said.

I know it’s sacrilege, but frankly I found PF close to the edge of boring.

Well, we still have Brit Floyd!

I went and saw "Several Species" this past June and had a great time.

I think I understand Syd Barrett and it was sad to watch/hear the documentary about him showing up at a rehearsal, hung around for a while (no one wanted to break (into) his trip), ... said nothing ... and walked out having never spoken to anyone and ... as far as I know ... no one ever saw him again

Brilliant musician and inovator that took acid and never came back

I think I did ... I understand Syd

Well we will always have the studio albums. Not seeing them live is no big loss. Their live concerts were basically a note-by-note replication of their studio music with a semi-interesting backdrop.

Was listening to the Meddle albums a few nights ago and my dog still goes nuts whenever "Seamus" plays.

The impression that I got from any recent interviews is that any problems between Gilmour and Mason are one-sided on Gilmour’s part, mostly because of Gilmour being unwilling to do any more tours.

Long-term members. Waters left back in 1983.

Syd exchanged a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage

As of now, only two of the four longest-term band members are still alive - and they can barely stand to be in the same room together.

At first glance, I thought you meant they could barely stand up and was going to admonish you not pick on the elderly...

Is a bummer... really too bad Roger Waters is such a supreme A-hole.

Their first albumn and the first few were wonderful.

Young men who were full of idealism.....never mind the instrumentals...I think I listened to the DSOTM for a whole year in high school.

Roger Waters lives in NYC. You know my take as a 53 year old is that he grew up with socialism and his lyrics became so depressing later in life.

The memory of a man in his old age are the deeds of a man in his prime....yep that first albumn is my fave!

I worked for a short period on a project called “Pink Fraud”. Gilmour has always been one of my favorite guitarists.
