This is really a pretty huge issue. With Russia's economy contracting pretty badly, it appears Putin will continue using his military to achieve "victories" for his country. It's a pretty good bet Putin will continue intervening in Eastern Ukraine - possibly more overtly than ever in the coming months. If Ukraine was given a green light to join NATO, that could spark a war. Russia would not wait for that integration, they'd probably move to take at least half of Ukraine immediately. On the other hand, some signal needs to be sent to Russia to stop what they are doing. Speaking for myself, I would be more comfortable with something along the lines of "we can't support Ukraine joining NATO at this time but we can provide them defensive weapons". "I don't care either way" doesn't really cut it.
I realize Trump is not going to versed on every issue, but this one is pretty significant. He will need to work on a more concrete policy where the Ukraine is concerned. Especially because he can ridicule Hillary over the Russian reset fiasco. This is a good opportunity for him to lambaste her for utterly failing in her dealings with Russia.
But again, is Ukraine stupid. It knows that because of Obama, NATO would be the worst of both worlds. Toothless tiger, big provocation to Russia.
I think Trump might be hinting that if Ukraine really wants to do that, a President Trump would be willing to talk about it.
Trump just might be someone who Putin would respect.
