Wasn’t it some judge who granted these cockroaches “birthright citizenship” for their kids?

For the longest time, didn’t the law state that one or both parents had to be natural born or naturalized citizens to convey citizenship to their kids? That’s why children born here to foreign diplomats are not automatically U.S. citizens.

No. That is a myth that is bandied about. If you look at the court decisions, you can see that the principle of jus soli was a part of English Common Law, which was what interpretations of American laws in our early years (well into into the 20th century) was based on.

The fourteenth amendment to the Constitution established it as an official part of the Constitution.

We need to change the Constitution in order to prevent people who were born here to be automatic citizens here.

I hate to use Wikipedia as a source, but if you will take the time to examine the source materials, you will learn a lot.

The Ingles case in 1830, for example, established that a man born in New York during the Revolutionary War was a citizen of the United States, even though his parent's sided against the colonists and with the British Crown. After New York was taken by the colonists, Ingles parents took him to Britain. But because he was born in New York after the Declaration of Independence and not during the time that the British Crown controlled New York during the war, he was indeed an American citizen by birth and was eligible to inherit the property left to him.

This isn't about a judge or a court magically handing out citizenship, the idea that you are citizen just by being born in the country is one that was centuries old in English Common law and was adapted by the United States at its founding.
