JN Garner I believe, he knew it before he was elected, didn’t stop him from taking it.
Back then, he was right, VPs were given little to do and one hadn’t been elected President without first succeeding to the office since VAN BUREN!!
Now VPs are important parts of the administration and should they so choose to run, front runners in POTUS elections. Every VP or former VP since Nixon who’s run has won the nomination, save only Dan Quayle’s brief and meager run in 2000 (1999 actually, he dropped out in September of that year).
