An interesting side note. In May 1940, Queen (then Princess) Julianna of the Metherlands, Prince Bernhard and and their children, were evacuated to Ottawa, Canada where they remained until May 1945. They resided at Stornoway, the residence of the Leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition.

While on Ottawa, Princess Julianna became pregnant. Under the laws of succession in the Netherlands, for this child to be in line for the throne, she could NOT have dual citizenship. The maternity ward of the Ottawa Civic Hospital was temporarily declared to be extraterritorial by the Canadian government, so Princess Margreit was born in technically 'international' territory. The Dutch flag flew on the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill to announce the birth of a new Dutch Princess.

Since the liberation of the Netherlands, every year the Dutch Royal family send thousands of tulip bulbs to Ottawa for the annual Canadian Tulip Festival, as a 'Thank You' for WWII. The Canadian Tulip Festival is billed as the largest tulip festival in the world. If you are ever in Ottawa, the largest displays are located along the Rideau Canal and Dow's Lake.
