A massive explosion at a warehouse in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin killed seven people and sent a fireball ripping through the sky, state media reported Thursday.
The blast, which could be felt kilometres (miles) away, was triggered when a shipment of explosives detonated in the container where it was being stored, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the real death toll could be well over 1,000 people. That second explosion—which had the explosive yield of 21 tons of TNT—essentially flattened several city blocks. The fact it happened at night meant any apartment complexes located nearby that were flattened were full of people.

There will no doubt be a number totally vaporized, others shredded. Does anyone have the figure on how many people in NY in 911 were never identified, and how many were only identified by DNA testing. People dead in apartments might be identifiable with DNA even if not visually intact. Much harder within the warehouses themselves although they will have lists of people scheduled to work that night. Right now the figure is 17, certainly several hundred is likely.
Ouch.
The figure for dead is up to 50 on Thursday and 700+ injured. Also word out that the Chinese are making it really hard for reporters to report this story, their usual pattern.

Thanks Cvengr. What a mess! Probably will turn out to be accident/incompetence.
I want to know if they saw a Tripod rise from the center crater.
;’)
What a coincidence.
Last week, the EPA releases over 3 million gallons of gold leachate hazmat into the Animas River and declares a massive HAZMAT spill, endangering the public safety.
This week, China accidentally explodes 700 tons of compounds used in the gold leaching process, also causing a massive environmental and public safety fiasco.
What happened to all the Gold?
I’d ask James Bond, but he was cut in half by a laser.
It’s obvious. No need to make the repository radioactive, when instead they can corner the market on gold refinery processes, when the markets collapse.
Ironically, or maybe goldically, this “for today” chart is from a few years ago:
