Here’s today’s political quiz question: what do these five states — Rhode Island, Vermont, California, Oregon and Maine — have in common. Yes they are blue states ruled by Democrats, but that’s not all. These are the states that use the least amount of coal — less than 2 percent — for electric power.
In fact, almost all of the states that are politically liberal and vote unfailingly Democratic are low coal use states. Washington, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are also in the top 10 states least reliant on coal. Only conservative Idaho is a red state with low coal consumption.
Meanwhile, the heavy coal using states bleed red. West Virginia, Kentucky and Wyoming are all states that get about 90 percent of their electric power from coal. Missouri, Utah, Indiana and North Dakota also get 75 percent of their electricity from coal. See table.
Mr. Obama announced last week the toughest environmental regulations ever against coal. This is part of the president’s war on coal that he announced when he was running for president in 2008. He has long admitted these policies to reduce emissions from coal burning electric power plants by one-third below 2005 levels by 2030 will “bankrupt” the coal industry. It’s working. Coal towns are being vaporized across America and coal companies are going out of business.
But the pain from the new EPA rules won’t be evenly distributed across America. Far from it. The coal producing states like West Virginia and Wyoming will see massive job losses and increases in electric utility costs. The nationwide costs will be about $100 billion a year eventually or a reduction in GDP by about one-half percentage point, the Heritage Foundation finds.

How many of those in the coal industry voted for obama? For those that did, they are reaping the fruits of their idiocy. Let them deal with what’s coming. As for the ones that didn’t vote for the tyrant, they have my sympathy. Too bad everyone has to suffer.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its jobs report for July – another consecutive month with a decrease in mining jobs. A total of 5,000 mining jobs were lost in July bringing the total loss of jobs in the industry to 78,000, with the majority of those losses in support activities for mining.
Since the most recent high in December 2014, the jobs report has displayed a dismal picture of the mining industry in the United States, which is merely a snapshot of the global challenges the industry is facing. Oil and gas companies across the globe are still implementing cost-cutting measures – which include layoffs – to remain afloat until the industry rebounds, which may be well into 2016 or later.
Very few actually voted for Obama. The UMWA is not what it used to be, and most miners are now independent.
I grew up in coal country and I have never seen a conservative coal town. That aside, the working class could be recruited into the conservative cause if we played our cards right. Reagan showed the way but then we followed after the globalists instead.
Maine is not a “blue state ruled by democrats.”
If anything, it’s purple.
The governor of Maine is the most conservative governor in the country, Republican Paul LePage. Last month, he signed a “Constitutional Carry” bill, which goes into affect in October.
The Maine House is controlled by the dems, but the Maine Senate is GOP controlled. The people here as a whole do not vote “unfailingly Democratic.”
Also, the GOP gained seats in the Maine House in November 2014.
Maine is not “politically liberal” except for the southern part of the state and some of the coastal areas further north.
The second congressional district, which covers most of the state, is represented by a Republican congressman, Bruce Poliquin. The first congressional district is “represented” by dem Shelley Pingree.
Then there’s our two senators, RINO Susan Collins and “independent” lib Angus King.
I wonder if the author of this piece has ever been to Maine.
Force the people to move to blue cities where their votes will be canceled out.

But the Dems have fostered two occupational fields to replace coal mining:
1 SS Disability
2 Reselling medicaid pain pills.
And they’re growing by leaps and bounds.
Does the power for the White House come from coal? IF so, Obama wants future Presidents to be using candles & writing their Executive Orders with a quill pen.
Any state that produces power from coal should not export any of that power to a blue non coal state. Let those top ten states get their power from wind and solar not from coal burned somewhere else.
Even though I don’t like to see men going down in a deep, pitch dark, dangerous coal mine to work every day; unlike Barry O fancies himself to be, I am NOT the boss of anyone else.
The numbers are a bit misleading.
California is a “zero” for in-state coal generation, but can be a user of 6.4% electricity generated by coal.
