I think some of those other candidates noticed how Rick Perry and Lindsey Graham spent several weeks slamming Trump and calling him names, and then they noticed which debate those two were in and what their support level was: 2% or less.
It was pretty funny when Chris Wallace tried to sic John Kasich on Trump. That failed so he tried Marco Rubio who also refused to play along.

All the candidates realize they have more in common with Trump than the three inquisitors at the desk.
