The world's glaciers are losing ice at a faster pace so far this century than at any time since record-keeping began more than 120 years ago, according to a new study that says glacial melt is a worldwide phenomenon and will continue even if the world stopped warming any further than it already has.
In the study, published last month in the Journal of Glaciology and conducted by the World Glacier Monitoring Service at the University of Zurich, scientists compared observations of tens of thousands of glaciers around the world with all other data available on the world's glaciers.
They used everything from satellite images and photographs taken on the ground and from the air, to drawings and lithographs made back in the 19th century and earlier. All together, the evidence paints a remarkably consistent picture of what's happening to ice around the world.
"The observed glaciers currently lose between half a metre and one metre [about 1 1/2 to 3 feet] of its ice thickness every year – this is two to three times more than the corresponding average of the 20th century," said Michael Zemp, Director of the World Glacier Monitoring Service and the study's lead author, in a statement.
That's the equivalent of "about three times the ice volume stored in the entirety of the European Alps every year," Zemp told the Huffington Post, adding that the current rate of ice loss is twice as fast as the 1990s and three times as fast as the 1980s.

Another misleading pantload. Glaciers are not permanent. If they were then the norhern part of the US and all of Canada would still be under a mile high ice sheet. Greenland around the year 1000 had a lot of arable land that could be lived on. A few hundred years later the mini ice age began and all of that changed and the ice sheets grew. Is Greenland melting?

I stopped going to Weather Channel (and weather.com) when they started pushing the GW BS.
If it makes you feel any better, the founder of The Weather Channel (now gone from there), thinks the GW crap is just that - crap.
Many of the world’s glaciers are above the freeze line - it never gets warm enough for them to melt. They do lose ice due to sublimation - evaporation.
So the “problem” isn’t melting, it is lack of moisture replenishing the ice pack. In some places it is a problem - like where they use the ice melt for hydroelectric power or irrigation, or skiing or tourism.

Not even close. We have been cooling since we’ve been able to accurately measure the temperature.
I live in Kansas, in an area known to be the furthest southern extent of glaciers the last time they crept south.
Soooo....sometime between that last glacial period and today, its warmed up.

It would have been even better to have seen the photo of the glacier taken during the Medieval Warm Period or the Roman Warm Period.
No one was around to take pictures back then, so it didn’t happen.
If you have Google Earth installed, you can see historical imagery. There is some ups and downs to the ice...or more likely, there is a seasonal aspect to this, and much of what is visible is snow pack on to of the mountains surrounding the glacier.
