15 Things Trump and Reagan Have in Common
Newsmax ^ | August 3, 2015 | Jim Meyers

Posted on 08/03/2015 4:36:41 PM PDT by Hojczyk

1. Like Reagan, Trump is a Washington outsider.

2. Reagan was dismissed as a serious candidate, and so was Trump.

3. Trump and Reagan were both attacked by the establishment as being extreme and simplistic. Yet people were so fed up with the state of the country under Jimmy Carter that Reagan beat him in a landslide

4 Trump shares Reagan's "passion" for what he believes in.

5 Trump espouses similar views as Reagan on illegal immigration.

6. Trump is a straight-talker, like Reagan. He doesn't hide behind political correctness, as his comments about illegal immigration demonstrate. Reagan talked to people from the heart and was dubbed The Great Communicator.

7. Trump began as a Democrat before becoming a Republican.

8. Trump, like Reagan, has been a TV star.

9. Trump seeks to follow in Reagan's footsteps

10. Trump and Reagan both opposed runaway public employees' unions.

11. Trump shares Reagan's overall aim as president: to make America great again.

12. Trump favors tax reduction, as did Reagan.

13 Trump, like Reagan, is pro-life. Trump said in April 2011 that he was pro-life after years of being pro-choice.

14. Trump and Reagan both have defended gun rights and the Second Amendment.

15. Reagan was the first president who had been divorced.

Thanks Jeb. I didn’t know that. My two college degrees failed me. Thanks again.

That doesn’t seem true considering his book ‘Time to get Tough,” published in 2011.

I’ve never made the claim the guy was our ideal candidate.

I understand. But that phrase was certainly was used a millions times to support the inept corrupt lying professional politicians before Trump's run. And we all know they're bought and paid for.

Here is my voting record:.

1972 Nixon
1976 Ford
1980 Reagan
1984 Reagan
1988 Bush
1992 Bush
1996 Dole
2000 Buchanan
2004 Bush
2008 Declined to vote
2012 Romney

I knew Bush would be a disaster, but I couldn't allow Kerry to become president.

I will never vote for a man as morally bankrupt as John McCain.

I could not stand by and watch Obama have another term in office, standing on the sidelines.  Only two votes in my lifetime haunt me.  Dole and Romney.

After the Republicans calling Buchanan the next Hitler in 1996, I voted for Dole.  It made me sick to do it, but I didn't want Clinton.  I didn't want Romey either, but by that time it was clear what Obama would do if given four more years.  Surpisingly, Romney hauted me about 10% as much as the Dole vote did.  I was actually incredibly disgusted leaving the polling booth, for the first time in my life.  The party was undeniably corrupt at that point, and I wanted nothing to do with it.  I wanted even less to do with another four years of the Clintons and their machine.

I've been on both sides of these types of debates.  I saw the Bush crew here in 2000.  In 2004 I took off for three months seeking to avoid it.  They didn't drive me off the forum.  I chose to leave rather than witness a repeat.  When I came back, a large segment of the Bushstapo was gone.  Best move in the history of the FR forum IMO.

People running around calling people "purist" when they voiced anger after being repeatedly betrayed by the career politicians. Americans who wanted secured borders were labeled isolationist, racist, and were told it was impossible, too hard to secure a border etc.

In know.  I agree.

Same exact thing went on with Bush during his last campaign for POTUS. He's not ideal so hold your nose and everyone vote for the better evil. It was endless, on and on.

IMO, the second go around on Bush was actually tamer.  During the first I would be posting off Bush threads about something more or less unrelated, and I'd be attacked out of the blue.  Some of those Bush folks were unhinged.  That sounds mean, but the only alternative was that they were paid hit men/women seeking to drive Conservatives off forums.  It was that bad.

I see Jebra as I saw George.  Neither of them have a clue.  At least Jebra didn't lose his marbles only for them to show up in his mouth, and then him refuse to take them out.

If we're talking Trump, I see him addressing Conservative issues today and loudly in public.  Has he just changed?  Is he an opportunist?

Honestly, I can't tell you.  I can get behind him and support him now hoping things will work out, or I can get behind Cruz or Walker and watch Jebra get the nomination.

I honestly think Cruz and Walker are prime candidates for the media to crush, so what do we do?

Dole was a has-been snore, lucky to be alive after falling off that stage. That was the extent of his quick witted activity during that campaign.   Bush didn't talk up Conservative ideals.  McCain certainly didn't.  Romney was a known disaster.

Trump has made Conservatism his main focus.  He wants to make America great again.  He doesn't view it as the pariah of the world.  In my book, that's more than half the battle right there.

Will we be disappointed by him?  Sure.  Were we by Bush?  Well, letting the nation melt down on his watch is something I don't expect to see under Trump.  That is progress too.

He’s probably my third choice right now.....but I do not trust his instincts....his conservative instincts...or should I say, some of his inner liberal instincts.

Does he say anything in that book....or anywhere.....about “limited government” or perhaps “the Constitution?”

Okay, I have no problem with that.

You’re probably experiencing some of the same thoughts I’m worried about.

sounds like we’re both recognizing the strengths and the value...while seeing a few little red flags on the horizon.....

I agree. Also, if anybody remembered the news clips of the 1980 campaign, Reagan used to always speak about the government as if he wasn't a part of it. People really tuned into that because Reagan made it about "us vs them" with them being the U.S. government. Reagan would say things like "Once again the government has their hands in OUR pockets."

I think Trump can even make a better case than Reagan that he is a true outsider who can go to Washington and shake things up.

He still talks about a replacement for Obamacare even now.

His emphasis is on private sector solutions, but he also troubles me by talking about a government provision too.

At least he’s not promoting single payer and trying to take down private insurance any way he can beind the scenes.

As for his government provision, he even wants a private sector cooperative agreement there that pulls together the health care industry to come up with solutions.

Obama didn’t even consult with physicians or hospital administrator when he was developing Obamacare.

No need for people with actually hands on health care provision experience.

He states about 45 million people are without coverage today. We have over 40 million out of work. If his back to work programs are successful, that 45 million might shrink to 20.

I am also concerned by how many people are on Medicaid and what that burden will cost states in 2016 and beyond.

Number one, our government should not be in this business.

I think that’s our main objection. I’m not hopeful even a successful businessman can come in and develop a decent plan for national health care, so we probably agree on this.

Do I think anyone else will do away with national health care? No. In some form or another, it’s a done deal at this point.

I’d be interested in reading what other FReepers think we could do.

Well, yes and maybe no.

Reagan talked about limited government all the time. I’ve yet to hear Trump do that. Reagan talked about extraordinary Americans...Trumps talks about, well, Trump. Reagan talked about what WE can do, Trump talks about what HE can do.

I am a long way from sold that Trump will go to Washington to uphold the Constitution (another topic he avoids) and work to limit government.

“How about the obvious - they both had _onald in their name.

One has a R. The other a D in front of Onald.. I can’t be the only one to see this right? Somebody smarter that I would have picked up on this?”

Ronald Reagan actually has two “R”s “RR”

While Donald Trump starts with a “D” and a “T”. “DT”

And yet he doesn’t drink ;)

Based on the verbiage used for replies, and a few other things, I quite sure it’s Edith or Edna.
