The glass facade of Cooper Unions $111 million academic building offers a remarkable view of a back alley packed with vagrants. I have seen drug deals, public urination, defecation, masturbation in broad daylight in the Taras Shevchenko alley, a Cooper Union faculty member told The Post. Its a place where many homeless congregate to sleep right in front of a church and between a high school and a college, the faculty member added.

If that is what is going on outside imagine what is going on inside.
That's quite an honor... I guess.
It’s the East Village and I’m there all the time.
Hobos, travelers and insane artists are an integral part of the neighborhood. Cheap, carefree neighborhoods are necessary for artistic development. This is why all the art and architecture schools were here. Most important historic developments since 1850 can trace their roots to a few blocks in this neighborhood.
Now we have all these rich idiots flying in from suburbia to be “artists” and they are complaining about a little urine or dope or hobos.
There are plenty of fake sanitized neighborhoods around the city and these fools can move there (if they can afford it).
Keep the Village RAW, REAL and CHEAP!!!!
Bomb it.
Embrace the diversity or move to Cuba.
I think they were all disasters. What a dysfunctional bunch of creeps. Perhaps if Bloomberg had not illegally run for a 3rd term, someone decent might have come forward.
How long have you lived there? Most New Yorkers still call it the Lower East Side, not the East Village.
Would you pay $52,300 per year for your son or daughter to receive this kind of education?
Isn’t this a common site in cities like San Francisco.
It’s the New York City cheer.
“Urination! Defecation! Masturbation! Rah!
Drugs and Rats and Sis Boom Bah!”
Easier said “Number 1, number 2 and number 3” outside NYC College.
The more I read your post, the more I don’t understand what the hell you’re talking about. Cheap housing in lower Manhattan? Unless you’ve been there for 40 years and are rent stabilized, there is no cheap housing anywhere in Manhattan. What artistes are doing, as well as students, are doubling and tripling up in apartments and splitting up the rent. Many of the old tenements are being renovated so that the landlords can jack up the rent. Rich idiots? Do you mean the corrupt Russians who have crashed into my town?
Bloomberg’s cosmic karma for his illegal run will be a Trump presidency.
I like it! For years, I wished Trump would run for mayor. I thought he’d be a fantastic mayor but I guess it was too small for him. One thing people may not know is that Trump has absolutely no patience with crime - particularly vicious crimes against women.
There is relatively cheap housing in the East Village if you know where to look. Not always safe and usually not legal but that is the nature of the place and people who live on the edge.
25 years as of last month. There are no official boundaries here. It’s whatever you and your friends think it is.
IMO: LES refers to the entire area south of 14th Street until somewhere in Chinatown. The East Village is a smaller neighborhood within that area. Not all portions of the LES are considered the village but the reverse is true.
BUT:
SOME people consider them entrely seperate neighborhoods as you see here:

Don’t give me some real estate agent’s nonsense about the lower east side. It is the lower east side just as Clinton is Hell’s Kitchen. I don’t even like the Soho designation which is another real estate agent’s invention that makes no sense. Soho in London is called that because people coming up over the hill would cry “Soho!” to alert people. What happened in lower Manhattan? It’s called lower Manhattan because there are no hills.
My family has been in this city since the Civil War and I have no patience with this nonsense. Where are all those cheap rents, btw?
Ooooh, not legal! Why am I not surprised. Russian, are you?
Ukrainian but I own my own home and dont rent. I’m one of the best engineers in this city and people beg for my services so enough with the generalizations.
I enjoy interacting with the hobos, drifters and artists more than the fake suits.
And yes, plenty of such people in the city live in illegal apartments. That is the rebel way
I dont give a damn what the neighborhood is called as long as it stays like this. The boundaries are in your head
You’re such a phony. I can smell a phony a million miles away with your pathetic stuff about artists and drifters and “edgy” stuff. You’re a typical Russian on the make in a city that either doesn’t understand you or ignores you or rolls its eyes at you. I’ve had Russians’ numbers since they flooded my city in the 1970s and got on the dole immediately, bilking this foolish city for all it was worth. But you were fairly good cab drivers, I’ll grant you that.
So take your illegal rentals and tax-free life style and shove it.
