Did You Ever Notice the Asterisk on Your Social Security Statement?
National Review ^ | July 31, 2015 | Myra Adams

Posted on 07/31/2015 4:12:00 AM PDT by Biggirl

While engaging in the mundane task of gathering financial statements for a “secure retirement” meeting with my husband’s and my adviser, this Baby Boomer stumbled upon documented proof that our nation does not have the guts to confront one of its most serious economic problems. The realization came when I pulled from my files a document statement innocently titled, “Your Social Security Statement.”

I paid into it since 1960...Nd it was a good idea. But the government stole the money I put in for retirement and used it for other things...which they had promised they wouldn’t do. Now they cut my retirement when I’m too old to go back to work and fo something about it. The young people in this country need to rise up and strike down this government and the people running it and start over. I’m mad as hell!!!

Oh, it get’s better. Under Obozo, SS payments have increased just a little over 1% while he was at the helm, but welfare and other “transfer payments” (e.g., free cell phones) have increased just a little over 30%. At what point does the Left realize that the productive members of society won’t stand for this? History is strewn with the wreckage of governments, like Greece, that thought they could maintain power by transferring from the productive to the unproductive. I’m not worried about me, but I fear for my kids and grandchildren. It’s way past time to stop subsidizing the freeloaders.

Dirty little secret: the government has assets.

They own land, buildings, equipment, patents, drilling and mining rights, etc. that can and should be liquidated to pay what they owe us.

It would also reduce the power of the government.

PS. Why do they always say "how much we paid in" without including a reasonable rate of return on our money?

They forced us into a Ponzi scheme at gunpoint and now tell us to FOAD!

This entire (long) rant could have been reduced to: “Your social security benefits are not guaranteed, and could be ended tomorrow without recourse”.

The rest of it is just whining.

It's not your money.

Has anyone noticed how all those article about when to start collecting your SS benefits virtually all conclude that you’ll earn more if you wait until you’re older to collect? LOL!

Stand for what? Increasing SS payments without a corresponding increase in revenue?

Some of those articles almost take the tone of ridicule--"how dare you take SS when you're first eligible?" You're missing out on the maximum payment!"

There are no guarantees in life, and no one will be lying on their death bed, wondering if they could've received a little more money from Uncle Sugar.

"Has anyone noticed how all those article about when to start collecting your SS benefits virtually all conclude that you’ll earn more if you wait until you’re older to collect?"

For a couple of reasons, I started to draw mine when I first became eligible at 62.

1) We needed it, 2) A lot could happen in 4 years before I reached the full retirement age. I could fall ill and die. Or the system could collapse due to decades of fraud at the hands of despicable, corrupt politicians, and giving benefits to those who should not be receiving them in the first place.

I wanted to make sure I got some of my 'contributions' back before Obie's illegals bankrupt the system.

That's not what I'm suggesting. I'm suggesting cutting welfare payments by at least 30%. Indeed, I'd prefer the Workfare system where anyone receiving public assistance and who can fog a mirror, shows up at 7AM to clean toilets, scrub floors, or any other work the public sector deems necessary.

“I paid into it since 1960...Nd it was a good idea. ...”

I’m assuming the ‘Nd’ in your statement means ‘No Doubt’, but SS was never a ‘good idea’.

The premise that accepting money from an organization that forcefully stole that money from other people is never a good idea.

Basically SS is the gov’t pointing a gun to your head saying “we’re stealing your money today to give to others now, but, at some time in the future we will stop doing so and send you money we stole from other people.”.

I see accepting SS money as receiving stolen goods.

I wish the whole SS system would collapse (along with many other unconstitutional other programs) so I may be left along to take care of myself when and if I ever live long enough to “retire”.

Imagine the retirement account you would have today if ever penny you paid into SS, had been put into some type of investment.

I expect the Dems to actually INCREASE SS benefits.

They will lift the cap on payroll taxes and extend it to very high levels of income.

They will slap a Tobin Tax on Wall Street transactions and apply that towards SS benefits.

Both will be enormously popular with the general public.
Both will pass.
Many Republicans will vote for it.

The can will be kicked down the road for several more decades. You and I won’t be around to see the Titanic hit the iceberg.

If you live to your life expectancy you will get just about the same total amount either way. You just have to guess how long you will live. Are you already ill with cancer and had two heart attacks? Take your smaller check at 62. Are you healthy and your family lived into their nineties? Wait until you are 70 to maximize your toral take... and hope you aren't shot by a jealous husband when you are "celebrating" your 70th birthday.
