With 20 percent of Republican voters, Donald Trump is the clear leader in the crowded Republican presidential primary field, but he trails any of three leading Democratic contenders by wide margins in general election matchups, according to a Quinnipiac University National poll released today.
Trump's 20 percent is the largest tally for a Republican contender in any national poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Behind Trump are Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker with 13 percent and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush with 10 percent. No other Republican tops 6 percent and 12 percent are undecided. |
|
Trump also tops the "no way" list as 30 percent of Republican voters say they would definitely not support him. New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie is next at 15 percent with Bush at 14 percent. |
|
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gets 55 percent of Democratic voters nationwide, with 17 percent for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and 13 percent for Vice President Joseph Biden. No other candidate tops 1 percent with 11 percent undecided. |
|
Clinton tops the Democrats' "no way" list with 9 percent, followed by former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley and former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee at 8 percent each. |
|
"They love him and they hate him. Donald Trump triumphs on the stump so far, but do voters REALLY want him? Maybe not so much," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. |
|
"The good news for Secretary Hillary Clinton is that she is over 50 percent among Democrats and has a double-digit lead over Trump." |
|
"The not-so-good news is that she is locked in too-close to call races with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. And Vice President Joseph Biden runs just as well as her against the top Republicans," Malloy added. |
|
Matchups among all American voters show:
|
|
Trump has the worst favorability rating of any Republican or Democrat, a negative 27 - 59 percent among all voters, with Clinton getting a negative 40 - 51 percent score, her worst ever. Ratings for other leading contenders are:
|
|
Naming the most important quality in deciding their presidential vote, 37 percent want a candidate who is honest and trustworthy, while 33 percent want someone who cares about their needs and problems and 26 percent want some with strong leadership qualities. |
|
Trump and Clinton have the worst scores among top candidates on honesty and caring:
|
|
"Republicans say Trump is honest and Democrats say Clinton is honest, but among all voters, both candidates come up short," Malloy asked. "How can you become a general election front-runner if most voters don't trust you?" |
|
From July 23 - 28, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,644 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The survey includes 710 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percentage points and 681 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percentage points. |

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research. |
Good that Jeb Bush is at 10% and losing.
Jeb Bush wants all of Mexico to move to the USA
It doesn't matter at this point. The base is dining on red meat almost every day.
4 in 10 Americans want Bernie Sanders to be President.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Sure Hillary is a big winner. /sarc You’d be a village fool to believe it.
“4 in 10 Americans want Bernie Sanders to be President.”
Most Americans would think he is the great grandson of Col. Sanders. They don’t even know who he is?
Yeah, and guess who’s payin’ for it. Oh, wait it’s “free” with that ebt card. I musta forgot.
Look on the bright side. We have a deep bench - Cruz, Walker, Trump.
If our vote doesn’t get split...
And if Democrat crossovers don’t tilt the vote to Bush...
We ought to end up with someone marginally acceptable to most, if not all conservatives.
Heck, almost half of ‘em want Hillary! for president. If that ain’t scary, I don’t know what is.
Then you can factor in the fraud vote...
“but he trails any of three leading Democratic contenders by wide margins”
Hilarious. That’s why Quinnipiac is a Dem pollster just like PPP but at least PPP and Zogby tells everyone they’re Dem.
If Trump is trumped, this tells us how badly the rest of our field would be gutted and stuffed.
Frankly, I don’t believe this poll will hold.
A month ago only 30% were interested in Trump. Today he is over 60%.
And, there has not yet been even a single debate.
If Bernie was as compulsive a liar as Hillary, he might use that line; “Some say I may be related to the Beloved Col. Harlan Sanders! You know, the King of Fried Chicken? While I cannot prove or disprove that theory, I must admit there is nothing better at dinnertime than a platter (or a bucket) of deep fried chicken. I’ve always been a chicken lover, now I know why!”
And I should care because....?
They attempt to fit an unconventional candidate into conventional polling methods.
Do I trust these polls? Nope. Especially not this early on. IMO, polls like this tend to be less scientific in nature and more designed to shape public opinion. That's reflected in the questions asked and the observations the polling company documents.
Clinton-Biden-Sanders: (48-49-45) vs. Republican.
Shows that Hillary is slightly weaker than the non declared buffoon.
But still the Democrat walking dead, does not leave much room for a Republican victory unless Trump can get the 2016 former “Reagan Democrats” to switch over.
Hint for the polling geniuses at KWIN-uh-pe-ack: don’t try to predict the outcome when it hasn’t even begun yet.
Why would they not mention that? lol
It won't. Trump's rising, Hillary's falling. Soon it will be statistically even. Trump will start peeling away swing voters and then disenchanted Democrats.
And then we have Michael Bay's big-budget Benghazi film hitting the theaters next year...
They're probably thinking they'll get a free bucket of chicken to go along with the other "free" government stuff.
