When Eric Schmitt's metal detector got a hit about 15 feet below the ocean's surface, he didn't think much of it.
Most of the time, the metal detectors uncover beer cans and lead fishing weights. But this time was different. This time, the treasure-hunter from Sanford struck gold, and a lot of it. Treasure-hunting Sanford family strikes gold-again Holidays are a lucky time for a treasure-hunting family from Sanford, Florida. Last year on Labor Day, the Schmitts made national news when they pulled several pieces of a solid gold chain - more than 60 feet in all - from the water off the coast of Fort
Schmitt and his family found 52 gold coins worth more than $1 million. The star of the haul was an extremely rare coin known as a "Tricentennial Royal" minted in 1715. It had been underwater since a fleet of Spanish ships foundered during a hurricane along Florida's Treasure Coast 300 years ago, Schmitt said.
"These things were known as presentation pieces not meant to be circulated as currency," Schmitt said.
That coin alone is worth about $500,000, according to Schmitt.
And according to Brent Brisben, co-founder of 1715 Fleet Queens Jewels LLC, the company that owns the rights to dive at the wreckage site where the gold was found, the coin's value comes from the fact that it is in nearly perfect condition and is a rarity. . .

Looks like they'll be upgrading.
Could not resist that one eh?
No!!! Never report found Booty!
Shovel and shut up!
All will be confiscated from bankrupt Spain.
The finders will get a foot note in history.
Give them 10% at the least!!
Treasure from sunken galleon must be returned to Spain, judge says
Never tell anyone when you find treasure like that.
Now the government will take it, refer to Mel Fisher
I never would have said a word. People talk too much.
Don’t worry. Mother Government will be here in 3...2...1...to take her cut!
The FIRST rule of, ‘Treasure Finders Club’ is that NOBODY talks about finding treasure!
Ya dumb@sses. ;)
...and the G stands for Gold!
Almost.
Last October my wife and I passed right by where they found that gold. I told her she should have spent more time digging her toes in the surf. Just because that shark kept circling around her was no reason to quit. Now we’re out millions of dollars. Drat.
Why do folks publically announce such finds.....knowing such a find will instantly generate legal claims of ownership...filed from the fisherman or guide near the site... to the insurance company that originally paid out the loss...to the Nation it originated from. The legal expenses will exceed the cost of the operation of its discovery and the value of the find. After all the palms are greased....it may have been better to just melt it down into ingots and sold as such. ....gotta pay the crew. ... just my observation... :)
Nah, different area. Spain vacated their claims over here when they lost the war.....off the coast of Portugal..that is different.
ping
...all will be confiscated by ...Spain...
Nope. They tried that already for the massive 1715 fleet treasure. They lost.
Florida has an interest in the leased area. It gets 20% off the top for everything found.
Spain’s Salvage divers, holding their breath, recovered alot of the goods immediately, but the million found is just a drop in the proverbial bucket for what is left underwater. There is also alot left in the high and dry dunes, but they are off limits to even walk on.
A big hurricane in the 80’s washed away and uncovered much of the Gold Coast dune, and gold and silver was found by just looking on the sand, and by metal detecting the beach below the dunes.
Someone dove and found 60’ of gold chain and 3 coins recently worth $300,000.
TRAYSURE!
What amount of kick-back was the judge offered to negate the salvage rights, tentatively in effect for 300 years on this wreck site? Molon Labe comes to mind...
The $500,000 coin.
Why thank you Nully!!!! My widdle hometown has become famous.
