Levin: Godlwater was no racist.

That's right. His objections to civil rights acts during the LBJ administration were mostly states' rights matters. The '60s pretty much repealed the Tenth Amendment.

We actually talked about the Tenth Amendment back then.. until being for the Tenth Amendment in particular was "RACIST!". Seriously.

Prominent Republicans George Romney, William Scranton, and scores of other Rockefeller Republicans blasted Goldwater and us supporters as "purveyors of hate", KKK, racists, bigots . . . as I recall they even tried to get something into the 1964 party platform saying as much. You may have seen Goldwater delegates booing Rockefeller, that's why.

I am still looking for that photo of Nelson Rockefeller at the podium giving the Goldwater delegates the finger with a big "f-you" grin.

(Not the photo next to his limo giving the finger to some protestors. Same grin though it appears.)
