Poll: Disaffected GOP largely backs Trump

More than half of Republican voters don’t believe Washington politicians represent their views, and a plurality of those voters want Donald Trump to be the party’s presidential nominee.

Fifty-three percent of GOP voters feel that D.C. is unrepresentative of their views, compared to 27 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents in a new CNN/ORC poll released Monday.

Trump holds a strong lead over that share of the Republican electorate — 24 percent of the disaffected back him. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is in second with 13 percent of that group, with the rest of the field far behind.

These GOP voters also are more enthusiastic about voting for president and are more likely to see illegal immigration as their top issue. While 56 percent of all Americans want the country to prioritize granting undocumented immigrants legal status, 63 percent of Republicans want the priority to be stopping the flow of illegal immigration and deporting those already in the country illegally.

Trump’s controversial rhetoric on immigration has drawn the ire of other Republican candidates, but he’s drawn strong crowds to his immigration rallies. The first batch of CNN/ORC’s numbers on Sunday found Trump leading the field with 18 percent of the GOP vote.

CNN/ORC polled 1,017, 898 of registered voters with margins of error between 3 and 3.5 percent depending on the sample. The poll spanned July 22-25, after Trump’s controversial comments on Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) war record.

The Democratic Party have been sitting ducks for several decades. A well thought out conservative agenda that was articulated, implemented, and defended in Congress would have shattered the Democrats into a million pieces. Such a blown opportunity to make this country prosperous and strong and the GOP blew it. I’m afraid that even if Cruz or Walker gains the nomination they’ll be attached to the bloated, rotting carcass of the Republican Party that is hated by many people including their own party members. The anger of the American people towards the political class is at all time highs and Trump, the non-politician, is reaping the political rewards from it.

Yeah, he has a big mouth, has knack for publicity, attracts attention. Says whatever is on his mind. He’s like child in constant need of attention.

BUT DO SOME DIGGING FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.

You know, the same thing the voters should have done on Obama in 2008-—instead of supporting his mindless generalities and platitudes.

If we did some digging on Trump, we might find that he has been all over the map on every issue conceivable, including illegal immigration. We might find that he has donated much more money to the DEMS than the REPs over the years including the Clintons. He says he loves the Clintons.

We might find that he inherited much of his wealth and that he has filed for bankruptcy before.

He has a big mouth, says anything, attracts attention. He is a showman more than anything else, an uncorked vox pox, and a carnival barker. I don’t trust him. He could very well be a stalking horse for the Clintons.

How far could a Walker or Cruz get if Bonehead and McConnell maintain
their leadership positions.

Nowhere. Bonehead and McShameless get their marching orders by the big money people, and so a conservative agenda will never be implemented until the GOPe is purged from the Congress. Hardly a chance for that since most Republicans in Congress are not conservative.

Republicans are so frustrated at the pathetic majority of GOP elected officials that they are saying to pollsters that they support Trump - to send a message to the RINO's.

The GOP is a party of broken promises since Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House. Lest we forget.

Trumpies should keep in mind that The Donald is part of the Washington Cartel of which Ted Cruz speaks. He is all for buying influence with millions of dollars.

He is also pro-choice, pro-gay, pro-gun control, pro-amnesty, pro-BigGov. This is what we want?

What we want is an energized GOP electorate that will go to the polls. Trump is doing just that and saying things that most candidates won't, but should. For instance, Hillary broke laws and shouldn't even be running....Trump is right.

No, Trump is anti- abort, pro traditional marriage, pro 2nd Amend, and no he's going to take DC apart.

People will back the candidate they feel will be the toughest on illegal immigration into the country. If people don’t like Trump then there preferred candidate needs to be more vocal about fixing this problem than Trump is. It’s just that simple.

I think that by default conservatives are more willing to face reality than ‘rat voters. And anyway, what do they really have to be disenchanted about, aside from their constant disingenuous promoting of the latest “victim” group? They’re getting everything they said they wanted, they just keep moving the goalposts after they do.

Good point. The GOP is a very easy target for Trump. The party has failed on so many levels.

The GOP cannot be rehabilitated IMO. McConnell and Boehner are symptoms of a much more serious disease within the party. These two are not the only “germs” in the party organism. They have plenty of well entrenched enablers.

Agreed the party is far from perfect.

Don’t think Trump is the answer.

I like the way they also polled Democrats and independents to gauge their crossover interest in Trump.
Oh, that’s right... they didn’t.

You may be right about Trump. But with respect to the party, attempting to reform the GOP is a fool’s errand. There is a deeply entrenched culture that defends the status quo, long established funding arrangements that engender political cronyism, willful neglect of conservative issues, and a long history of supporting the continued growth and expansion of big government. It doesn’t welcome or like the idea of outsiders coming into its country club and questioning its “traditions”. Trust me: the party is only interested in itself, not you.

As a Catholic, I get a double dose of this when you consider the Commie pope we now have.

I have considered leaving my Church. I have considered leaving my Party. When I look at our current POTUS, I have thought of leaving my country. I live in CA and have often thought of leaving my state. I live in L.A. and have thought of leaving my city.

But I always end up staying put. I never give up. I make the best of what I have. That includes my wife, my family, my house, my job.

Nothing in life is perfect, least of all politics. You have to work with what you have and pray for better days.

The message is the GOP-e has managed to anger 53% of its BASE.
Someone needs to be held accountable for such mismanagement.
I point the finger at the Bush Family and John McCain.

The Bush Family continues to miss-read its party and then fails to correct its mistakes.
McCain is clearly working both sides of the political fence for his own reasons.

I suspect McCain wants to setup a McCain Dynasty w his wife replacing him and then “The Boob”
