GOP Senators Lead Push to Allow States to Impose Internet Sales Tax

Republicans in the Senate are leading efforts to pass legislation that would allow the states to impose a sales tax on online transactions.

Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY) has proposed the Marketplace Fairness Act (MFA), which would allow states to "collect and remit sales and use taxes with respect to remote sales.” The bill includes an exemption for companies whose gross remote sales are less than $1 million per year. The legislation enjoys support particularly among legislators in rural states who believe that online retailers are encroaching on sales made out of traditional storefronts. […]

This is not the first time Enzi has pushed for an online sales tax. In 2014, he was able to pass the bill in the Senate by combining it with another bill called the Internet Tax Freedom Act (ITFA). Conservatives supported ITFA because it prohibited taxes from being imposed on Internet access service. However, the package never reached the floor of the House for a vote.

So, let’s look at the reality of this asinine idea:

50 states (or 57, if you are a dumb-ass Kenyan liberal):

Each has its own tax laws, and therefore, every internet business entity will be required to know the tax regulation of all fifty states ... This will be interesting. Since this is not difficult to grasp from the get-go, it becomes clear that the real agenda here is protectionism ... put the low-overhead competition out of business. Perhaps the only i-net entity that could handle the enormity of the tax regulatory burden would be Amazon ... Which is why, IIRC, they support the idea.

That isnt even true anymore. Amazon collects taxes if the item is stocked in a distribution center warehouse of theirs in your state, and plenty of state online businesses collect taxes on intrastate internet purchases.

I’m going to watch and see whether my Republican senator, Cory Gardner, and Republican congressman, Doug Lamborn, vote for any bill that contains this outrage. They’re both conservatives with good voting records so far, but we’ll see.

Obviously they don’t abide by the Constitution of the United States which includes the following in Article I, Section 9:
“No Tax or Duty shall be laid on Articles exported from any State.” What am I not understanding here?

I am thankful we live in Orygun, a no sales tax state.

But, the convenience, selection, prices and on-line reviews have skewed our household shopping to mostly internet. I can check prices at many sellers in a few minutes and order exactly the model I want without having to put up with “that one is backordered”. And, we drive less, which saves both on gas and on vehicle replacement costs.

I have ALWAYS said that the Republican backroom ‘advisers’ (most of them gay, by the way) are a FIFTH COLUMN in their to make sure we don’t actually win - in this case they’re making themselves a bit too OBVIOUS.
