Sen. Cruz: Today’s Events Show the McConnell-Reid Leadership Team Operates for One Party: The Washington Party

American people elected a Republican majority believing it would somehow be different from a Democratic one

Video of Sen. Cruz’s floor speech today

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After speaking on the Senate floor today, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) issued the following statement:

“We’ve just seen something extraordinary on the Senate floor. The American people elected a Republican majority believing that a Republican majority would be somehow different from a Democratic majority in the United States Senate. Unfortunately, the way the current Senate operates, there is one party, the Washington party.

“Senate leadership consists of the McConnell-Reid leadership team. They operate as a team. They support the same priorities. If you look at what has occurred in the United States Senate since the Republicans took a majority, we immediately returned after winning a historic majority to pass a trillion dollar ‘cromnibus’ bill filled with corporate welfare and pork. Then, the so-called Republican majority voted to fund Obamacare. Then, the so-called Republican majority voted to fund President Obama’s unconstitutional executive amnesty. Then, the so-called Republican majority voted to confirm Loretta Lynch as attorney general. Then, just moments ago, the so-called Republican majority voted to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank, an egregious example of cronyism and corporate welfare.

“Every one of those is the priority of the Democratic leader Harry Reid. Every one of those is the priority of the Republican leader, Mitch McConnell. They operate as a team, expanding Washington and undermining the liberty of the people. What we just saw a moment ago is unprecedented in the annals of Senate history. It consisted of the majority leader and the minority leader denying members the ability to have votes on their amendments and indeed the ability even to have a roll call vote. The denial of a second, as you just saw a moment ago, which was aggressively whipped by the majority, is an extraordinary measure designed to gag Senators and enforce the will of the McConnell-Reid leadership team.

“It saddens me as a Republican to see Republican leadership lead the effort to kill an amendment that would have prevented lifting sanctions on Iran unless and until Iran recognizes Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state and unless and until Iran releases American hostages. Make no mistake – granting a sufficient second for a roll call vote is done customarily in the United States Senate. Denying it is extraordinary, and it is done as a consequence of the majority leader Mitch McConnell being afraid for his members to be on record on this issue.

“We then, subsequently, saw Senator Mike Lee from Utah bring up his amendment to defund Planned Parenthood. We have seen in recent weeks gruesome videos of senior officials of Planned Parenthood discussing the selling of body parts of unborn children. These videos are horrifying, and yet it saddens me greatly that the Republican leader led the effort to continue the taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood.

“Make no mistake — when the majority leader whipped Republicans to vote alongside Democrats, it was no surprise that Democrats did not want to vote on that because Democrats in this chamber do not purport to support the right to life. But to see the so-called Republican leadership whip against allowing a vote to defund Planned Parenthood — it has the virtue of clarity. It makes clear that the McConnell-Reid leadership team is united in favor of big government spending and debt and power.

“The McConnell-Reid leadership team has no interest in cutting off one penny of funds to Planned Parenthood, which is why leader Mitch McConnell just blocked a vote on defunding Planned Parenthood. To the millions of Americans who rallied in November believing if only we got a Republican majority in the Senate something would be different, this was a clarifying and a sad moment.”

It’s not just Mitt, my friend. It’s Thad, and Mitch, and Lamar, and all the rest who followed the Turtle like a bunch of sheep, today.

Yep. We need a house cleaning in the worst sort of way.

I knew a guy who ran Jerry Brown’s campaign in Texas. He told me that in 1991 a meeting was called to see who was going to run for the democrat party nomination in 1992. At the time Old Man Bush was at 90% approval ratings. The only two who showed up was Brown and Clinton.

Clinton’s plan was to run in ‘92 not thinking he would win but would be the front runner in ‘96.

Then all of a sudden “read my lips, no new taxes” started to take it’s toll and Perot showed up and Bush quit. Clinton was elected. That’s why I think a deal was cut.

On election night of 1992 I told my wife “George Bush Jr. will be the next president after Clinton and Hillary will follow him.” She thought I was nuts since he hadn’t even been elected governor yet. W was president behind Clinton.

I think Hillary had it in the bag until a powerful group, including Harry Reid and Bill Ayers, saw it was time to put in a Marxist and a black man would do the trick. He had made his name known as the keynote speaker at one of the nominating conventions earlier. I think it was at Kerry’s nomination. The powers got hold of him and made him president.

And I’ve always thought that Bush II helped a lot and we know McCain was a big help.

So, if I’m right and the original machine is back in power, and the Clintons sure have a lot of money, Hillary will be the next president just as planned but 8 years delayed. The plan is for Jeb to be after her. I don’t think she will get but one term like old man Bush got.

I sure hope I’m wrong and Trump or Cruz gets in. But we have to remember Cruz doesn’t have the money and Trump doesn’t have near as much money as the Clinton Foundation has.

It’s going to be Cruz or lose for me...but I won’t know for sure what I am going to do until after the convention.

I'll be happy enough if Cruz winds up as the VP to Trump. After eight years of Trump shaking things up in DC, Ted will be perfectly positioned to take the restoration of our constitutional republic to the next level.

They may already be planning that very thing. Remember the closed door meeting they had recently? They're cooking something up.

not me alone. not even the great Ted alone. but with God, brother, all things are possible.

i’m going to keep plowing the field i’ve chosen and
hope Ted joins me. it’s the only field left for me to plow, given what i believe (that the uni-party is corrupt).

after all you gotta do your best to seek out what God wants you to do and then you’ve gotta have faith that He is a rewarder of them who diligently seek Him.

nice talking to you. God bless.

Yes, I recall conversations along those line..regarding the power brokers.

I keep thinking, cycle after cycle that one day the public will rise up and deny them their plans.

It seems to me that the last time that happened was Reagan.

I hope it happens again in ‘16. But all I have is a hope, After Obama’s re-election it took the wind out of my hoped for the US.

Yes...and I like that look!

They got a sure battle to fight now....it’s not going to be pretty by any means. Look how the Senate Republicans did Cruz and Lee today.....to teach the a lesson they have to “play by their rules”.....squashing Cruz’z and Lees two great amendents as “out of order” to prove whose the boss.

And you know...they really don’t care that it makes them look bad or that their hated. They have nothing to loose as they see it....it’s “Their Congress”...we are the spectators only.

I think the questions about Mitt are, would he be better than 0 on national defense; yes. Would he be better than 0 on the economy; yes. Would he be better than 0 on foreign policy; yes. Would he be better than 0 Supreme Court justices; yes. I could go on but it is simply conjecture. While a bit off the subject the mendacity of many of our elected officials is beyond belief even to a jaded old bastard like myself. The house and senate leadership come to mind. When senators and congressmen lie to you straight to you face, on a consistent basis, we are in a new era. These people seem to have no moral compass what so ever. Have a good week FReeper.

I didn’t see any reports of him siding with the good guys on this particular day, but that can’t help his candidacy. He supported Mitch’s re-election for whatever reason and he has to be ticked about Mitch’s behavior since his election. I would be. But I would never have supported Mitch in the first place..

I don’t think Mitt’s record informs for many of the issues here. It is beyond question in my mind that Mitt would be far better on nation defense, the economy, the border, Supreme Court, spending etc. Sadly there is no way to know with certainty. My conjecture is as viable as yours.

I suppose there is "no way to know" if one refuses to Look.

You are ignoring the clear parallels and direct linkages to those areas of policy in Mitts established record. The only question is, why? Are you too prideful to admit you compromised your conservative values by supporting the greasy liberal in the last election?

No Windflier I am not. I am fully aware of Romney’s record. And yes I did vote for Mitt in the last election. I supported another candidate but he didn’t win. If you really believe there is no difference between 0 and Romney you are no where near as savvy as I thought you were. I believe you and many other conservatives are sick of being betrayed and simply cannot figure out how to fight back effectively.

Respectfully disagree. Ross Perot put Clinton in the White House.

We can agree to disagree, but when a bad candidate loses momentum, the vacuum will be filled.
