In a rare and fiery weekend session, the Senate voted on Sunday to resurrect the federal Export-Import Bank, handing the Republican Partys most conservative wing a major defeat and setting up a showdown this week with House leaders divided over the moribund export credit agency.
The bipartisan vote 67 to 26 broke a filibuster and allowed supporters to attach a measure to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank to a three-year highway and infrastructure bill, which is expected to pass the Senate early this week. The agencys authorization expired June 30, halting all new loan guarantees and other assistance to foreign customers seeking to purchase American companies products.
A clear majority in the House also supports resurrecting the agency, but it will be up to House leaders to decide whether the body will get a vote, or whether to allow the banks opponents to stand in the way. Those opponents are led by the House majority leader, the majority whip, the Ways and Means Committee chairman and the Financial Services Committee chairman.
The agency has become something of a proxy war between the Republican Partys ideological conservatives, who have labeled the bank an unnecessary bastion of crony capitalism, and its pro-business wing, which sees it as vital to American exporters competing against countries that routinely support their industries.

Of course Boehner and Ryan will
Why don’t they get rid of HUD & Education??
A House divided. Will it stand?
I admit to never having even heard of the Export-Import Bank before all this.
I am so glad I donated and volunteered to help the republicans win the senate.
Things are much different than when the dems controlled it...
Does not sound divided to me. Bonehead, McCarthy RINO’s and Pelosi’s Rats
will unite.
I do not know enough about the Export-Inport bank to have an opinion on that. I do, however, have an opinion on liars. McConnell is wrong to lie in order to get his way. What is up with that?
Maybe not. Boehner and Pelosi want to get more goodies in a long-term Highway Bill.
Greed vs greed. Hard to say which way they can fleece us the most.
Of course they will. This is K Street campaign cash on the line months before the next election. They have been bought, but we don’t have to approve the sale by voting for them.
When it comes to government as a whole, a divided house is preferable to a united house. A united house gives more opportunity for tyranny. A divided house should indicate different factions of the public being represented. The calls for “bipartisanship” seem to only serve the liberals. It translates into “why don’t you conservatives ignore conservative principles and vote with the liberals.”
Now taking that theory to a divided party might be different. I suppose it depends on which side is winning and which side is losing.
I wish that Congress (minus Cruz, Mike Lee, and a few others) would just sink into a huge sinkhole deep into the bowels of the earth, never to be heard from again. They are worse than useless, they actively promote, support, and enact evil upon the rest os us, while exempting them and theirs from the evil they impose upon us.
No one is talking about how much the gas tax is going up in this long term bill. It’s always shiny object Kabuki theater with these a-holes, “oh my the IM bank” meanwhile we’re getting it shoved up our butts and no one notices.
There is no hope. This government will only reform itself when it goes bankrupt, if even then.
What? You never have? It's right there in Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution where Congress specifically is authorized to set up a special international bank and crony slush fund for the benefit of their bankster friends, big corporate buddies and lobby donors, and the friends of their friends overseas as well.
It's right there. Don't you see it? Turn the page, it's right there,... Oh wait a minute. Never mind. Let's talk about the latest breaking GOP contender poll and how Trump is ruining our cozy election process instead, shall we? Yeah.
lolol
I believe the gas tax is not raised.
There are several strange “offstes” for the money : http://t.co/N3VAFregOl.
One of them has since been dropped, don’t know if a tax increase was inserted, but don’t believe it was.
I’d like to see Trump offer to fund a primary challenger to Boehner. That would really shake DC up.
So it’s OK to attach the I-E bank to the Hghwy bill but not defunding PP?
