The American electoral circus has taken the stage and people around the world are watching in disbelief. To say they are not impressed would be an understatement. A Colombian columnist called Donald Trump a "lab rat," for testing the U.S. tolerance of toxic political debate. In India, a commentator writes dismissively that the "self-declared 'greatest' democracy is descending into a farce."
Sadly, the reality is that the early stages of the 2016 presidential race are providing the world -- and America -- with a lesson in the weaknesses of the system.
Trump, who currently leads polls for the Republican nomination, has built his campaign on attention-grabbing insults and a level of self-adulation so distasteful that it works better as parody than promotion. It's no wonder comedians (and Democrats) are having the time of their lives watching his show.
His quick rise demonstrates how a politician can manipulate the electorate, particularly when the field is so large and divided, how name recognition and shock value can so easily tip the scales, and how appealing to fear and prejudice under the guise of "plain talk" can fire up certain segments of the electorate.
In fact this carnivalesque approach is proving so successful that another candidate, Sen. Lindsay Graham, decided to give it a try. After Trump called him an idiot and gave out his cell phone number, Graham put on a show of his own, complete with a samurai sword slashing through his flaming phone.
What's the world to make of American democracy in light of all this?
Sure, some of it is funny. And it is electoral politics, so people expect a lot of empty talk. But Trump is not just a windbag. Yes, he can be that. But much of what he says is also really toxic....

Speaking the truth... brings many out of the Liars Closet..
They despise the truth... can’t handle the truth..
The truth is so damned obvious.. takes a boatload of lies to cover the truth..
Absolutely no sign of comprehension on her part regarding our system, and the fact this fulfills the very robustness of it that the founders planned on.
Competing ideas Freda... Why are you so terrified of them?
You didn't mind Obama, a man with absolutely no provable experience who has trashed this nation non-stop.
You didn't mind this terrorist associating president in our White House. Why does Trump cause your system to back up and overflow out your mouth?
And I love that I can support a candidate without being badgered daily for campaign contributions. Wonderful.
They know the only way we could ever be a shithole like the countries they want to flee is if we have another Obama...You know, like Hillary.
After 7 years of the Kenya chief, I’d say it’s a little too late to be worrying about America’s image. That was shot seven years ago.
I think I can speak for the vast majority of Americans when I say that, collectively, we don't give a shit about what the European mind thinks about us, and we haven't for over 200 years, and that is a very good sign that America still has a fighting chance of remaining the freest and most prosperous country in the world.
The putrid, warped, collectivist puddle of liquid Marxist shit which the average European's mind has become, along with their media and their governmental regimes, are of absolutely no account.
So keep wringing your hands, wailing, and gnashing your teeth, Europe, and America will continue to welcome those of you who have enough brains to realize that the grass really is greener on the American side of the ocean.
All of Marxist Europe, along with their twisted welfare state, their citizens clamoring for entitlements, and their collectivist Tyranny, can pound sand until further notice.
But don't worry, Europe and the rest of the "civilized" world! America will be there once again when you engineer the next murderous World War, and American blood and treasure will once again bail your ingrate asses out of the mess you've made. Even though, once again, you'll hardly deserve it.
To paraphrase Dr. McCoy, when he was on Capella commenting on a Klingon's spin and propaganda: "What Europe says is unimportant, and we do not hear their words..."
R*E*S*P*E*C*T, that’s what it means for the US and its image. And if not outright fear and trembling, at least a little anxiety.
They said much the same about a Hollywood B actor.
I love how leftists cry about how the world sees the U.S.. Who cares??? I don’t care what snotty Europeans think. What do they want a president who wears a top hat and tuxedo?
I listened to Michael Savage’s show on Friday, (he had a substitute host) and every caller, and I mean EVERY caller from California to Florida was for Trump. There is something going on out here, and the snobbish, elitists think it’s a joke. It isn’t!
Oh, and I heard on Savage’s Friday show from the guest host - Brian something or other - who has a good friend who taught at the U of Chicago when obama was supposedly an adjunct professor. This isn’t true - he was a guest speaker at an event, and that was the extent of his so-called teaching. This is something people don’t know.
Isnt it funny that early on in the despots regime they held the house and the senate and they did nothing because they had no one to blame but themselves if they did anything
in re the headline...
Hopefully, candidates like Cruz and Trump and their supporters’ attitudes will communicate to other countries and the far left in the US that most Americans are damned well fed up with all of the liberal PC kumbaya BS!
People are tired of being treated like a second rate country that the Democrats began leading us toward in 2006 and then doubled down with Obama in 2008.
No other former allied country can now trust the US. None of the enemy countries or terriorist groups fear the US. Obama’s legacy!
Tough, unapologectic.
Nice!
It makes me smile and giggle every time I think it...
