Mahler: ”Blumine”This was the original second movement from Mahler’s Symphony #1 in D. He revised the work by expunging it completely. It was re-discovered in 1959 in the trunk of Natalie Bauer-Lechner, his first biographer. The symphony is rarely performed with this movement, which is a shame. There are some themes quoted in the finale from this movement, so I’ve always thought of it as an integral part.

Mahler: Symphony #5 in C# minor, Fourth MovementThis was used in the movie “Death in Venice” and at the funeral of Bobby Kennedy. It’s one of the most beautiful slow movements of any symphony. Time simply stops.

I love the way Mahler stretches out the resolution of the last chord into D-flat Major at the end. It’s the perfect closing.
