BAYONNE -- The wind turbine used to power the city's Oak Street and Fifth Street pumping stations has gone motionless, costing the city roughly $25,000 a month in energy costs, officials confirmed.

Ha, ha, hahaha. I wonder what al gore and all the greenies have to say now?
Windmill self-destructs in storm

IS it still dangerous to light a match in Bayonne?
The article says the windmill was supposed to provide cost savings of $300K a year. It was working for 3 years so they that would be almost $1 million but the article unfortunately doesn’t say if that amount was achieved. And why would a city buy something that has an expected life of 20 years without a warranty that covers at least half that length of time. And from a supplier closer to home so you don’t have to ship the thing to Italy for service. So many unanswered questions.
you need to contact the reporter and coach him./s
well, surely there must be a warranty
The math in this story does not seem to add up. One wind generator generates $25k/month of electricity?
They rent the windmill for $25,000 a month to power the pumping station.
Well that blows
OK. It may indeed make some sense.
You remember Uncle Milte’s?
I was kidding, sounded like something governemnt would do.
Oh yes I do I was there a few times in early 70’s. And the wooden wreck of a dock at the foot of Avenue C. And the #14 Bus
They rent the windmill for $25,000 a month to power the pumping station.
Makes no sense: a “little” windmill that size cannot generate 30,000.00 a month in electricity - EVEN IF it were generating full-power 100% of every minute of every day of every month.
And - worldwide - on average windmills only generate 17% - 22% of their nameplate ratings over a full year’s operation. At best, for a land-based installation near a city (NOT high on a ridge or at sea with excellent average winds) you get 1/6 of its nameplate (rated) power.
It is a simple scam: The greenies hired out the windmill to “look nice” and to let the city “feel good” - but while getting 30,00.00 a month in free money. And not ever having to actually generate anything, nor provide maintenance, nor provide “minor issues” like warranties or service. And, the green constructors get a tax write-off, tax rebates, and construction money from the fed’s.
You and I pay. The local citizens pay for the “real electric” bill. The local utility pays through increased maintenance and downtime on the fossil generators that have to keep starting up and shutting down as the wind comes and goes and goes and comes and varies every minute.
Sure, it’s a waste of money.
Even expensive wind power at $100/mwh means Bayonne is paying $25k per month for wind power that could be bought for around $14k per month, IF I followed through the numbers correctly.
So government paying twice what a reasonable business would pay is realistic, especially in NJ.
Early 60’s. They a wooden roller coaster.
I remember riding on it , how close to Kill Van Kull it was at western end of park.
