The man alleged to have shot up a movie theater in Lafayette, La., has been identified as John Russel "Rusty" Houser, a former political candidate and activist here in Columbus.
Columbus police confirm that federal authorities have contacted them about tracking Houser's background.
Houser is the son of the late Rembert Houser, a longtime city tax commissioner.
Rusty Houser had a history here of political activism, fighting taxes and at one point running for office.

According to the Associated Press, 2008 court records show Houser's family sought protective orders because he "exhibited extreme erratic behavior and has made ominous as well as disturbing statements."
The documents said Houser was living in Phenix City but had traveled to Carroll County, Ga., where his family lived and "perpetrated various acts of family violence," adding that he "has a history of mental health issues, i.e., manic depression and/or bi-polar disorder."
The family petitioned a probate court to have him involuntarily committed "because he was a danger to himself and others." Houser was taken to a Columbus hospital after the order was granted.
He was at the Carroll County Sheriff's Office awaiting transfer to the hospital when Houser told his wife that once he got out, "he would continue his erratic as well as threatening behavior" to stop his daughter's wedding, the filing said.
It said wife Kellie Maddox Houser "has become so worried about the defendant's volatile mental state that she has removed all guns and/or weapons from their marital residence." She filed for divorce in March....
Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor told the Ledger-Enquirer Houser in 2006 was denied a pistol permit, and was served eviction papers March 25, 2014, while living on 32nd Street in Phenix City.

What I’d like to know is whether he was taking psychiatric medication. I keep hearing horror stories about people who take them - paranoia, etc.
Highly disturbed individual ......in legal possession of a firearm.
Well, a lot of seriously mentally ill people do take psychiatric medication.
And here's the deal every Constitution hating/gun grabbing pig will ignore, viz. this animal already broke numerous federal laws by owning firearms. And since he already broke said laws, more laws would have made no difference.
But, of course, that doesn't matter to the crowd with no brains.
Billie Joe at least had the manners to just jump off that bridge himself, he didn’t take two innocent young women with him.
I suppose he could of been in Louisiana for the purpose of getting a gun, since it seems he wasn't able to get one in Georgia.
It would be interesting to find out whether the threats and plots pre-dated the medication.
If only the shooter had "Billie Joe'd" himself. Very, VERY sad about those innocent victims in that movie house. Thank you for taking me to task and resetting my perspective.
after the Charleston shooting there were several articles about studies setting out that all, or almost all, of these mass murderers, or wannabees, were on some pretty serious psychiatric drugs - prescription type drugs, I believe.
The solution is not gun control but psycho control.

I know you didn’t mean it that way, and I wasn’t taking you to task. I’m very fond of that song and Ms. Bobbie Gentry myself. I guess I just feel especially bad in that in all this talk about this sick psycho we’re forgetting about two young ladies who thought they were going to spend an innocent evening watching a comedy, and ended up paying with their lives.
Prayers for them and their families.
Floyd said in a phone interview with Yahoo news. He had Tea Party-radical Republican views on everything. Id have a Democratic spokesperson on [for the opposing perspective]. He generated a lot of phone calls.
Houser was a member of Tea Party Nation, according to the groups website.
The Hatewatch Blog, which is run by the Intelligence Project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, uncovered that Houser posted about his fondness for Hitler, neo-Nazis and lone wolves on several online forums.
