Philadelphia Letter Carrier Charged With Not Delivering 22,000 Pieces of Mail

Maybe the snow, or rain, or heat, or gloom of night, got to him.

A Philadelphia mail carrier was charged with committing the greatest infraction of a United States Postal worker — not delivering the mail.

Federal prosecutors allege Patrick D'Ambrosio, 48, declined to deliver a whopping 22,000 pieces of mail on his route between May 2014 and January of this year. He instead opted to stick the materials in his car and his northeast Philadelphia home.

This behavior is the exact opposite of what the USPS motto stands for.

"Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.

The mail included 7,182 first class letters, 220 first class certified letters, 11,734 standard letters, five U.S. Treasury checks, 307 pieces of political mail, 2,508 non-profit letters, 417 second class periodicals and 137 small parcels.

This scheme is actually more befitting the fictional postal worker Newman from the TV show "Seinfeld," who was known for taking some liberties with his mail carrier responsibilities.

Upset with his failure to land a transfer to Hawaii, he didn't deliver his mail for a week and passed it off to his neighbor Jerry instead.

Newman also didn't work in the rain — even when a free calzone was to be had.

D'Ambrosio was charged with obstruction of mail — a misdemeanor with a sentence of up to six months in jail.

But as Newman will tell you, "When you control the mail, you control … information!"

I know. I was just teasing you. It is sort of reminiscent of the “This is Hugh and Series” infamous post.

He sounds like a first class jerk. Jail should be a priority for him.

I’m a letter carrier. Not all of us are bad. I have a great relationship with my customers. This was a failure of management also. If I missed one package my postmaster would be down my neck the next day. Certifieds also are tracked and accounted for. So pure laziness allowed this guy to get away with it.

Ragging on the USPS is a popular pastime here on FR, but I have always had excellent service. I’ve shipped hundreds of packages, never lost one, never had one damaged (knock on wood) except for a few sent to me that were poorly packed.

Once I had a letter carrier knock on my door in the pouring rain to tell me that a package had been left by another carrier at a side door that I rarely use. I rescued it in time with minimal damage. Now, THAT’s service!

Humans do make mistakes on occasion, and there are always a few bad apples in the barrel, but in general, the USPS does a great job.
