Frigid offices, freezing women, oblivious men: An air-conditioning investigation
The Washington Post ^ | July 23, 2015 | Petula Dvorak

You can spot them. The frozen ones who come outside at lunch like sun-seeking turtles, cardigans balled up next to them, bare shoulders defrosting in the noon sunlight, no matter how wilting it is outdoors.

Every single woman I talked to in downtown Washington on a hot, humid July afternoon was thawing out.

“I. Am. Fuh-reezing. Feel my hand, I’m still cold,” said Ruth Marshall, 64, who was seated on a park bench, face to the sky. And yes, her hand felt like a cold steak.

“I have to come out here for 30 minutes at a time just to warm up,” said Marshall, the director of administration at a construction firm, where the air-conditioning is set to Arctic.

It’s the time of year desperate women rely on cardigans, Pashminas and space heaters to make it through the work week in their frigid offices. And their male colleagues barely notice.

It’s now the end of the July and I have yet to turn my air conditioner on...my aprtment is over a garage so it stays comfortable most of the time.

But I hate air conditioning air....so I just let my body adapt to the weather changes in the summer....but then i do live in PA.

I’m sure that this is a serious problem worthy of some sort of governmental regulation. I’m just glad it wasn’t about “freezing offices and frigid women”.

An important issue for her campaign.

If it’s too cool you can put something on, if it’s too hot there’s a limit to how much you can take off. This will probably end with a federal law dictating that women are to be in control of thermostats or the employer will be fined.

They should accept that the office is not a place to be trolling for husbands.

Because bars work so much better?

I met my wife on the job, as did many people.

I have to admit, I’ve never had that problem. All my life I’ve gotten hot more easily than everyone else around. Reaching that certain age (which happened early thanks to operation) just made it worse. I could honestly sit in a tub of ice in summer and love it, I take cold showers in summer as it is, and I started getting in the pool and loving it back in April! All I eat in summer is lime and pineapple popsicles, it’s too hot to eat real food, and the popsicles lower my core temperature for a little while.

Learn to live without your sweater girls!!

My wife used to be like that. Only now, she's going through the change. Our house is too cold for even me sometimes.

Am I the only woman here who has hot flashes and freezes my family out on a regular basis??

Sheesh. I cannot stand to be hot. I’ve been known to step outside when it’s in the 40’s to release some steam. (Husband was quite shocked when I took my t-shirt off and took a 30 minute snow bath one night.)

Cold people can always put on layers. Hot people can only get so naked.

Overheated people take priority, IMHO.

So, men must sweat to please the women? So be it and do not be offended ladies when the sweaty, grumbling gym workout essence surrounds you in it’s suffocating cloud.

It’s the way that the thermostat is set in the wall.

Think about it this way...

You’ve got a thermostat set at about the five foot mark at 70*. In the winter, when you’re sitting down, it can actually be as much as 5* colder nearer the floor where you’re sitting. It can be over 80* near the ceiling. (heat rises)

So, to get warm while you’re watching TV, you have to set the damn thing at 75* to get it to 70* on the sofa and your feet are still cold.

But in the summer, the overall temp is higher. So now the AC is fighting to make that five foot mark 70*, but it’s not reaching below as well.

Get a cheap thermometer and look to see what temps you’re *really* experiencing at your body-level. It’s eye-opening.

I do think that men have a better ‘range’ than women. My husband functions just fine at 60-95* without complaint. I cannot do that. Once it’s over 75* I’m in trouble. And I mean ‘call an ambulance my heart is beating at 200BPM and my blood pressure has dropped to 50/unreadable’ kind of trouble.

Yeah. I actually go into shock if I get too hot for too long.

Irritating. (I live in Arizona of all places)

When a woman gets to be a certain age, they welcome the AC and will freeze out their male counterparts without noticing. Just sayin....

My husband used to freeze me out until I went through the change. After one complaint too many about the chill, I reminded him of the “advise” he often gave me in his younger years: Put a sweater on!

He looks at me, blinks, then says “Oh no! I've become you and you've become me!”

LOL!

I used to work in a different area of the building I'm in now. It was more towards the center of this huge building.

The wimmens would regularly turn down the thermostat in the Summer because they were "freezing". The temperature was set to 72 degrees and they would turn it up to 80.

We menfolk finally put our foot down and demanded that;
A. Building Services lock the thermostat to 72 degrees and to block random access.
B. Any women who were "freezing" at 72, bring in appropriate outerwear to deal with it.

The funny thing is, in the Winter, when the heat was set to 74 degrees, they still complained that they were "freezing".

Because it’s easier to add clothing than to subtract it...

I like to remind my wife that I simply cannot take off my skin, but that she can put on a sweater, etc.

Men dress for work. Too many women go to work half naked.

Men wear suits while women put on a sleeveless shirt with a skirt with flip flops.

The women in my office regularly complain about the A/C in the summer.

I point them to the Burlington Coat Factory across the street.
